Morgan State Ends 2014 With Trip To Chattanooga For Christmas Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Dec. 20, 2014)-The Lady Bears will close out the 2014 year when they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. to take part in the Christmas Classic (Dec. 20-21) hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The Lady Bears will face host Chattanooga on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 4 p.m. at McKenzie Arena, before closing out the tournament with a noon contest against Tennessee Tech on Sunday, Dec. 21. This will be the only regular season tournament for Morgan State this season.
   
BEAR CLAWS: The Lady Bears (2-8) had their season long losing skid reach six straight after a heartbreaking 50-48 home loss to Stony Brook (12/13) at the buzzer. Braennan Farrar scored a career-high 21 points, including Morgan State's final 12 points of the game. Ivy Harrington added nine points, six rebounds and had a game-high three steals for the Lady Bears. Lexus Spears hauled in a career-tying 11 rebounds in the loss. Morgan State has been led by senior Tracey Carrington, who is averaging 19.3 points per game, which ranks third in the MEAC. Carrington, who has not played in three-and-a-half games since getting injured prior to halftime in the Bucknell game, also ranks second in rebounding (5.1 per game), assists (15) and steals (15). Farrar has stepped up in the absence of Carrington, averaging (10.2 points), while leading the team in steals (22) and assists (26). Harrington is coming off the bench to contribute 7.7 points per outing. Harrington ranks second in the MEAC in field goal percentage at 53.4 (31-of-58).
  
ABOUT THE LADY MOCS: Chattanooga (7-3) is on a three-game winning streak, following a 54-46 victory over Stanford on Wednesday. Chelsey Shumpert scored a team-high 18 points, including five three-pointers, while Moses Johnson finished with 10 points. Jasmine Joyner pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and added a game-high five blocked shots for the Lady Mocs. Chattanooga, which also defeated Tennessee earlier in the season, has been paced by Keiana Gilbert, who is averaging 11.5 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per outing. Joyner is contributing a team-leading 9.1 rebounds to go with 10.8 points per game and also leads the Lady Mocs with 38 blocked shots.
 
MSU VS. CHATTANOOGA SERIES NOTES: The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga leads the all-time series, 1-0, following a 70-67 victory over Morgan State during the 1984-85 season.
 
LADY BEARS VS. THE SOCON: Morgan State is 0-5 all-time against members of the Southern Conference. Here's how the Lady Bears have done against the SoCon: Chattanooga (0-1), UNC Greensboro (0-3) and Western Carolina (0-1). The Lady Bears have never faced East Tennessee State, Furman, Mercer, Samford or Wofford.
 
ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES: Tennessee Tech (2-8) is coming off a 72-53 loss at Lipscomb on Thursday. Candace Parson scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Catherine Taylor came off the bench to score 13 points. The Golden Eagles have been led by Samaria Howard, who is averaging 14.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Parson is contributing 9.6 points and a team-high 5.7 rebounds per contest.
 
MSU VS. TENNESSEE TECH SERIES NOTES: Tennessee Tech holds a 1-0 all-time lead over Morgan State. The Golden Eagles defeated Morgan State, 88-66 during the1984-85 season.
 
LADY BEARS VS. THE OVC: The Lady Bears are 3-4 all-time against members of the Ohio Valley Conference. Here's how Morgan State has done against the Ohio Valley: Jacksonville State (0-1), Murray State (1-2), Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (1-0), Tennessee State (1-0), Tennessee Tech (0-1). The Lady Bears have never faced Austin Peay, Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Southeast Missouri or UT Martin.
 
NEXT UP: The Lady Bears will be off until January 1, when they ring in the New Year with a non-conference game against rival the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. at RAC Arena.
 
BEASLEY FOUR WINS SHY OF SCHOOL RECORD: Morgan State head coach Donald Beasley, who is in his 10th year at the helm of the Lady Bears, is four wins shy of becoming the program's all-time coaching leader. Beasley, who currently ranks second on the school's all-time list with a mark of 119-163, earned his second win of the season against Washington Adventists (11/20). LaRue Fields (122-60 from 1979-85) is the school's all-time leader.
 
FARRAR NAMED MEAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Freshman Braennan Farrar was named MEAC Rookie of the week by the league office on Dec. 15. The St. Louis, Mo. native led the Lady Bears in scoring during the week, averaging 18.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists against Hampton (12/8) and Stony Brook (12/13). Farrar scored a then career-high 16 points and added three rebounds, three steals and an assist at Hampton, before setting a new career high with 21 points, including the Lady Bears' final 12 points of the game in a two point loss to Stony Brook.
 
FARRAR SETS SEASON-HIGH IN SCORING: Braennan Farrar scored a career-high 21 points in a 50-48 heartbreaking loss at home to Stony Brook (12/13). It was the second consecutive game that Farrar set a new career record, surpassing her pervious high of 16 points at Hampton (12/8).
 
LADY BEARS SUFFER FIRST HOME LOSS: Morgan State was dealt its first home loss of the season in three tries, when Stony Brook defeated Morgan State, 50-48 on a buzzer beater on Dec. 13. It was the final home contest of the 2014 season.
 
STILL SEARCHING: The Lady Bears are still searching for not only their first road win of the season, but their first victory over a Division I opponent. Morgan State's two victories this season have come at home and against Wesley (Del.), a Division III opponent and Washington Adventist, an NAIA opponent.
