Bears engineer late drive to escape Hampton with victory, 38-35

MSU improves to 4-1 in the MEAC

HAMPTON, Va. --  Moses Skillon threw for 252 yards and the game winning touchdown to lead Morgan State to a 38-35 win over Hampton on a dreary, cold and windy Saturday at Armstrong Stadium.

Morgan State (5-4, 4-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) not only played spoiler for Hampton's homecoming festivities, but they also remain solidly on course for what would be the Bears' first conference title since 1979.

"Hampton played well today, and is improving every week," said MSU coach Lee Hull. "It was a hard fought victory, where our guys kept fighting for 60 minutes."

Hampton was on the verge of putting the game away. HU's freshman quarterback Jerrell Antoine scored on a 9-yard keeper, followed by a 2-point conversion off of a fake point after attempt to trim the Bears' lead to 31-28 with 6:20 remaining.

On the ensuing kickoff into a 19 mph wind, the ball was kicked high into the air and was fumbled by MSU's Cody Acker and recovered by Hampton at the Bears' 37-yard line.  Antoine engineered a 10-play, 37-yard drive, capped by a Christopher Dukes 5-yard TD run to help the Pirates retake the lead 35-31 with just under 3 minutes left to go.

It turned out to be plenty of time left for the Bears.

Hampton squibbed the kickoff and MSU speedster Orlando Johnson scooped it up and dashed 27-yards. At the end of the return, the officials stepped off 15 yards for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Pirates. The flag gave the Bears 1st and 10 from the Hampton 33.

Skillon went 1-for-4 during the final possession, but the one pass he completed was on a clutch 3rd and 10 from the 17. The redshirt-junior delivered a screen pass to Walker who broke one tackle and faked out another defender, racing into the endzone for the winning score.

Skillon, who posted his first career win as a starter, completed 21-of-37 passes for 252 yards. He also added 45 yards rushing on 12 carries and another touchdown.

Walker finished with seven catches for a career-high 109 yards and added 67 more yards on the ground, including three touchdown runs.

Five touchdowns were scored in the final quarter and the lead changed five times.

The Bears put up nearly 400 yards of offense and had 23 first downs against the Pirates defense. Hampton managed 381 yards, but the Bears recorded four takeaways (2 fumbles, 2 interceptions).

Sophomore safety Antonio Jefferson led the Bears defense with a game-high 13 tackles (11 solo), a tackle for loss, a fumble recovery and a blocked extra point.  Senior linebacker Cody Acker finished with nine tackles and a sack.
