BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 30, 2014)-The Morgan State volleyball team will host the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division match this Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. at Hill Field House. The contest will also be the Lady Bears' fifth annual 'Dig Pink' match to help raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.
Friday's contest will be the Lady Bears' third straight 'Dig Pink' match and the fifth overall this season for Morgan State. Morgan State is 1-3 in the previous four contests with that lone win coming against UMES in Princess Anne, Md. (10/10) during the Lady Hawks' 'Dig Pink' event.
The Lady Bears (11-11, 4-5 MEAC), who will be playing just their second home match during the month of October, are coming off six consecutive road contests, where they went 2-4 during that stretch.Â
Morgan State, which is on a season-long four-match losing skid, is coming off a 3-0 road loss to defending MEAC champion, Hampton on Sunday. Evely Macedo led the Lady Bears with 10 kills, a career-high four service aces and five digs. Samantha Prescott recorded a match-high 10 digs, while Carmen Fernandez totaled 20 assists, three kills, two aces and two blocks. Dinah Jones finished with a match-high three blocks, giving her a team-leading 52 for the season.
UMES (10-14, 3-5 MEAC) enters Friday's match on a two-match losing skid, following a 3-0 non-conference loss at East Carolina (10/28). The Lady Hawks were led by Haley Robinson and Kristen Fink, who each tallied a team-high seven kills. Fink also added 10 assists, seven digs and two blocks in the loss. Precious Manu had a team-high eight digs, while Alana Polk finished with a team-high three blocks.
Friday's match, which will be the 54th meeting between the two teams with Morgan State holding a 35-18 all-time series lead, will also be an important one in the league standings. The Lady Bears currently hold the fourth spot in the northern division, while UMES sits in fifth. Only the top four teams in each division will advance to the MEAC championship scheduled for Nov. 21-23 at Coppin State University.
