Howard Overtakes Second-Place In MEAC With 3-0 Defeat Of Morgan State

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 16, 2014)-Khaila Donaldson recorded a match-high 11 kills and Assata Conway added nine with no errors for a match-high hitting percentage of .750, as host Howard defeated Morgan State, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-21) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division match on Thursday evening at Burr Gymnasium.
 
The match, which was Howard's homecoming and Dig Pink contest, was also for sole possession of second-place in the MEAC standings. The Lady Bison improved to 12-9, 5-1 in the MEAC, while Morgan State dropped to 11-8 overall, 4-2 MEAC and fell to third-place in the division to close out the first half of the conference slate.
 
Katherine Broussard recorded a team-high nine digs and Allyson Lods added eight. Stephanie Shultis finished with 29 assists, seven digs and had a match-high three service aces to help the Lady Bison extend their winning streak to three straight.
 
Morgan State, which had its season-tying three-match winning streak come to an end, was led by Dinah Jones, who finished with eight kills. Zuri Smith added six kills, while Arianna Hayden notched a match-high 14 digs. Carmen Fernandez totaled 20 assists, nine digs and had a hitting percentage of .667 with four kills on six attempts.
 
The Lady Bears finished with 30 kills, committed 24 errors on 97 attempts for a season-low .062 hitting percentage against Howard. It was their lowest percentage since the season-opener against East Tennessee State, when the Lady Bears had a .065 hitting percentage. The 30 kills also tied the East Tennessee State match for the fewest kills this season.
 
Howard finished the match with 34 kills on 95 attempts and had 12 errors for a hitting percentage of .232.
 
The Lady Bison recorded eight service aces, but had 12 service errors. Morgan State had just one ace for the entire match and committed seven service errors as a team.
 
Howard also held a 5-3 advantage over the Lady Bears in blocks. Donaldson led the host Lady Bison with three, while Whitney Fields and Conway each added two blocks. Hayden led Morgan State with two blocks.
 
The Lady Bears return to action on Sunday, Oct. 19, when they visit crosstown rival Coppin State in a MEAC North Division contest. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Physical Education Complex. Morgan State won the first meeting between the two teams, 3-1 at Hill Field House (9/26).
