DeWayne Jackson scored 16 points and
Kevin Thompson scored 13 to help lead the Bears to a 71-54 win against MD-Eastern Shore in an ESPNU televised game at Hill Field House.
The Bears were 21 of 57 (44.7 percent) from the field, including a 4-for-6 performance from Thompson, who posted his 10th double-double of the season by scoring 13 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Rodney Stokes added 14 points and posted nine rebounds, while Tola Lawal chipped in 13 points.
The Bears (14-10, 9-3) held onto a piece of first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, along with Bethune-Cookman. The Bears improved its streak to four wins in a row, and has now defeated the Hawks in 8 of their last 9 meetings.
UMES (6-21, 3-11) lost for the fourth straight time and have lost 9 of its last 11 games.
After trailing by a many as 6 points in the first half, the Bears used an 17-3 run to finish the Hawks off early.
UMES' last lead (21-20) came with just over two minutes remaining in the first half when Mark Robertson hit a 3-pointer.
A 3-pointer by Larry Bastfield, followed by a steal and layup by DeWayne Jackson with 29 seconds to play in the first half ignited the beginning of the end for the Hawks.
The Bears opened the second half by making its first four shots and outscored UMES 10-3. Following a pair of free throws by Stokes at the 16:55 mark, the Bears had opened a 37-24 advantage.
From there, the Bears coasted in a game in which everyone on the roster received playing time. MSU ended up leading by as many as 21 points.
Dishawn Bradshaw led UMES with 11 points and Hillary Haley finished with 10 points.
The Bears held a 53-38 rebounding advantage and limited the Hawks to 29 percent shooting, including 4 of 18 from 3-point territory.
