Volleyball Returns Home to Battle Navy on Tuesday at 6 PM

BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 13, 2010)-The Morgan State volleyball team will play host to the United States Naval Academy on Tuesday, Sept. 14, in a non-conference match at 6 p.m. at Hill Field House. The match will mark the eighth meeting between the two teams with Morgan State holding a 5-3 advantage. The Lady Bears defeated the Mids, 3-0 in Annapolis during last year's Battle of Baltimore.

  

The Lady Bears (1-9), who this season won their season opener for the first time in 11 years, has since lost its last nine contests. Morgan State is coming off three straight losses over the weekend at the Cleveland State Invitational, including 0-3 defeats to Kent State and host Cleveland State and a 1-3 loss to George Washington.

  

Ashley Johnson led the Lady Bears with 27 kills and added 32 digs, while Erin Cox tallied 24 kills and 23 digs. Dominique Bozier, who finished with 14 kills, three digs and seven blocks, including two solo, was named to the CSU Invitational All-Tournament Team.

  

The Lady Bears have been led by Cox, who is averaging 2.74 kills and 2.12 digs per set, while Johnson is contributing 1.91 kills per set. Dina Beamon leads the squad in digs with 4.21 per set. #Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh# (145 assists) and Jourdan Lemons (110 assists) have shared the duties at setter, while Bozier and Shaundalyn Taylor lead Morgan State in blocks with 24 and 17, respectively.

  

Navy (3-7) is currently on a three-match losing skid after dropping all three matches last weekend in the Bryant Invite in Smithfield, R.I. Erin Fortner leads the Mids in kills (2.19) and in service aces (10) and is second on the team in assists with 137 and second in digs with 2.09 per set. Ndidi Salmon and Kaitlin Roseti share the lead in blocks with 33, while Jenny Rudewicz has a team-leading 149 assists.

  

The Midshipmen are 1-1 this season against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foes. Navy lost to Norfolk State in three sets and defeated Delaware State in four sets. Following the Morgan State match, Navy will take on MEAC North members Howard and Maryland Eastern Shore both on Sept. 18 and Coppin State (Sept. 28) in Annapolis and will later play host to MEAC South member North Carolina A&T on Oct. 4 also in Annapolis.
