PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Aug. 27, 2010)-For the second consecutive match, Morgan State found itself down 0-2 on the opening day of the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational. Only this time the Lady Bears were unable to overcome the deficit, falling in three sets to host Duquesne 0-3 (17-25, 7-25, 14-25) in the second match of the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational on Friday evening at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
Morgan State (1-1) finished with 19 kills on 97 attempts and committed 17 errors for a hitting percentage of .021 for the match. Erin Cox led the team with a team-high five kills and Rhyan Shy and Dominique Bozier both tallied four kills apiece in the loss. Jourdan Lemons finished with 10 assists, while Dina Beamon led the squad with 12 digs and Cheryl Savoy added seven.
The Dukes (2-0), who recorded 45 kills in 99 attempts and had 11 errors, finished with a hitting percentage of .343. Nicole Wright totaled a match-high 10 kills, while Liz Homan and Allison Foschia each added nine kills. Amy Palko notched a match-high 15 digs, while Brittany Poling had 13. Sarah Svorinic recorded 38 of the team's 43 assists.
The Lady Bears did hold a 4-3 advantage in blocks with Shaundalyn Taylor leading the way with three, followed by Kierra Riley with two. Bozier added a block, giving her 163 for her career, two shy of passing O'Tasha Williams for ninth-place all-time.
Duquesne took control of the match early, recording 16 kills in the first set for a hitting percentage of .297 and limiting the Lady Bears to six kills and a hitting percentage of -.030. The Dukes continued their pressure with a set-high .480 hitting percentage on 14 kills and just two errors in the second set, while Morgan State tallied only four kills and was held to seven points in the set.
Morgan State fell behind, 9-0 to start the third and final set, before getting on the board by scoring the next four points. The Dukes upped their advantage to 13-4 and the Lady Bears responded with a mini 5-1 run to pull within 14-9. But that would be as close as Morgan State would get.
Morgan State returns to the court on Saturday, Aug. 28, when it takes on Montana State at 3 p.m. at the A.J. Palumbo Center. The Lady Bears then close out the tournament against co-host Robert Morris at 7 p.m. at the Charles L. Sewall Center on the campus of Robert Morris.
