BALTIMORE, Md. (June 1, 2010)-The collegiate track and field season will enter its final stage next weekend in Eugene, Oregon (June 9-12) with the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Although neither Morgan State's men's nor women's team will be in contention for a national team title, Morgan State will be represented this season in Eugene, as sophomore Trey Charles and senior Allison Randall will be in attendance, competing in their respective events.
The last time Morgan State had athletes competing at the NCAA Outdoor Championship meet was during the 2006 championships in Sacramento, Calif., when the Lady Bears' Brittany Robinson (high jump) along with current assistant coach Janice Smythe (400 meter hurdles) both qualified. The last Bear to make it on the men's side was Jean Cummings, who in 2002 competed in the long jump at the NCAA championships in Baton Rouge, La.
Both Charles and Randall positioned themselves for an opportunity for a national title last weekend when they secured their spots at the NCAA East Region Preliminary Championship in Greensboro, N.C.
Charles, a native of Atlanta, Ga., placed sixth in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 50.36, while Randall, a native of Reisterstown, Md., also finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 172-09.
Charles, who will be one of 18 male athletes representing the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) from six of the 11 MEAC institutions, is seeded 14th out of 24 competitors in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 50.32, which he ran during the semifinals round at the NCAA East Region Championships.
Randall is among four women from four institutions, who will be representing the MEAC. Randall is seeded ninth out of 24 competitors in the discus with a seed mark of 172-73.
Hayward Field is one of the best known historic track and field stadiums in the United States. Named after the Oregon Ducks first track coach, Bill Hayward, who ran the program from 1904 to 1947, Hayward Field has served as home to the Oregon Ducks' football team from 1919 until 1967 and has been the home to the Ducks' track and field teams since 1921.
Hayward Field, which will host its ninth NCAA Championships, has also hosted the USATF Championships, USATF Elite Running Circuit events and the stadium annually hosts the Nike Prefontaine Classic in June. It hosted the US Track and Field Olympic Trials in 1972, 1976 and 1980, making it the only site to host three consecutive trials. It again hosted the Trials in 2008 for the Beijing Olympics and will also host the 2012 Track and Field Olympic Trials for the London Olympics.
