HAMPTON, Va. (Oct. 22, 2010)-Erin Cox tallied a match-high 12 kills and #Ngebui (Natalie) Chafeh# added 10 kills to lead visiting Morgan State to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 28-26) victory over Hampton in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division match at Holland Hall.
The Lady Bears, who improved to 33-2 all-time against Hampton, upped their record to 5-15 overall, 3-2 in the MEAC with the win, while Hampton fell to 6-19, 2-3 MEAC.
Dina Beamon led Morgan State with 14 digs, while Cox added 13 digs to record her sixth double-double of the season. Rhyan Shy finished with 11 digs and Jourdan Lemons tallied a match-high 28 assists. Shaundalyn Taylor contributed four kills and a team-high three blocks, while Dominique Bozier added two blocks, six kills and two digs.
Morgan State opened up the first set on fire, taking a quick 9-3 advantage. But the host Lady Pirates countered with an 8-4 run to pull within, 13-11 and eventually tied the match at 17 all. From that point on, the two teams would trade leads four times and had three ties. Morgan State extended its lead to 23-21, following a kill by Cox, who also ended the set with a kill for the 25-22 victory.
In the second set the Lady Bears broke a 5-5 tie with a 10-3 spurt to take a 15-8 lead. The guests increased their cushion to 23-15 after a kill by Chafeh. But Hampton again would not go away, using a 6-0 run to get within 23-21. But a service error by the Lady Pirates' Ivana Suput ended the run and Cox and Bozier combined on a block to end the set and give Morgan State the 25-22 win.
The third and final set was played tight throughout with 10 ties and five lead changes. The Lady Bears held onto a 20-18 lead, but Hampton rattled off three straight points to go ahead 21-20. The hosts increased their lead to 24-22, but the Lady Bears battled back with a block by Taylor, followed by an attack error by Hampton to even the score at 24 apiece. The two teams traded the next four points, before Morgan took a 27-26 advantage on a service error by the Lady Pirates. Lemons then ended the set and the match with a kill for the 28-26 victory.
Hampton was led by Aaryn Harrison, who collected 11 kills and seven digs in the loss. Suput tallied a match-high 15 digs, while Lihi Elkayam finished with 26 assists. Lina Cordoba notched three blocks, while Harrison chipped in with two blocks to help the Lady Pirates hold a 6.0-5.0 blocking advantage.
The Lady Bears, who are still searching for their first home win of the season, return to action on Sunday, Oct. 24, when they play host to Maryland Eastern Shore for Homecoming in a MEAC North Division match at 3 p.m. at Hill Field House.
