GREENSBORO, NC -- The Morgan State men's basketball team has found it hard to get a win on the road. But tonight in Corbett Sports Complex the Bears fortunes changed.
Ronald Timus recorded his best game since putting on a Morgan State jersey. The junior notched his first double-double of the season by scoring a career-best 21 points and hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds as the Bears held off a late rally to beat North Carolina A&T 63-31 before a raucous crowd of 1,268.
The Bears snapped a two-game losing skid and improved to 6-5 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and 8-13 overall. The win also marked the Bears second road victory on the season.
N.C. A&T (4-17, 3-7) guard Sean Booker led all scorers with 22 points, despite being held to 2-for-10 shooting performance from 3-point distance. The only other Aggie to score in double-figures was Rechodd Carter who chipped in 13 points with five assists.
Timus was the only player for Morgan State to score in double-digits. The Washington, D.C. native shot 7-of-11 from the field and knocked down 7-of-13 free throws. Chris Grant was the Bears second leading scorer with seven points, while Sam Brand, Tim Berkley and Aaron Andrews added six points each.
The Bears were ahead 60-57 heading into the final two minutes, but a 3-pointer by Booker pulled the Aggies to within a basket of a tie.
On the ensuing Bears possession Timus drove to the basket and lost the ball out of bounds after apparently being tripped. A&T had 17 seconds to attempt to tie the ballgame or take the lead with a 3-pointer. The Aggies got the ball into the hands of Booker but MSU's defense forced him into shooting an airball to seal the Bears second road win of the season.
MSU had one of its better efforts on the glass as they outrebounded the Aggies by a 41-36 margin. A&T's defense made it tough for MSU as they forced the Bears into committing a game-high 30 turnovers.
The Bears will be back in action when they host North Carolina A&T in a rematch on Thursday, February 10th in Hill Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
