WASHINGTON, D.C. —Will Gant scored the game winning basket with two seconds left to give Howard University a dramatic, 79-77 come-from behind win over Morgan State University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s game at Burr Gymnasium.
The game was a seesaw affair that featured 13 ties and 11 lead changes. Morgan State’s Chris Grant (3-10 overall, 1-2 in the MEAC) tied the score at 77-all on a basket by Grant (13 points, 11 in the second half) with 9.3 seconds remaining. He was fouled, but missed the free throw that would have given his team the lead.
The Bison (5-6 overall, 2-0 in the MEAC) in-bounded the ball to Gant and the sophomore guard dribbled up the right side of the court, reversed his direction to the middle of court and lofted a floater from eight feet out. Morgan State failed to get off a shot before the buzzer sounded.
Both teams slugged it out and the Bears appeared to take control when they put together an 11-3 run that gave them their biggest lead at 74-66 with 2:31 remaining.
But the Bears, who were playing without starting point guard Timothy Mathis and junior forward Ronald Timus, made some crucial mistakes down the stretch that allowed Howard to take the lead at 77-75 on a three-point play by Darryl Hudson with 14 seconds left.
Cliffone Ault of Howard led all scorers with 22 while Hudson contributed 18 points, 14 coming in the second half. Gant, who started in place of starting point guard Louis Ford, finished with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists.
Sam Brand paced the Bears with 15 points while Aaron Andrews and Grant each tallied 13 in a losing cause.
Morgan State will try to re-group when it travels to Dover, DE to take on the Hornets of Delaware State on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
