Box Score

The Morgan State University Lady Bears (3-22, 3-13 MEAC) got their first conference road victory in two years as they knocked-off the Lady Aggies 73-63 in Greensboro, NC Monday night.

MSU had not defeated a conference opponent on the road since they beat the Lady Aggies in Greensboro, NC back in February of 2002.  The MEAC road losing streak had reached 20 games before the Monday evening victory.

The Lady Bears and Lady Aggies were in a close battle for most of the game.  However, MSU's Sharonda Watson proved to be a difference maker.  Ms. Watson led the Lady Bears with 21 points, including some key 3-pointers to help MSU dig out from an early 14-8 deficit.

A late 1st half run, led by freshman Whitney Johnson helped the Lady Bears take a 33-28 lead at intermission.  Ms. Johnson finished the night with 16 points.

Morgan State hit 12-of-24 shots from the floor (50 percent) in the second half, after hitting just 11-of-28 (39.3 percent) in the first 20 minutes. The Lady Bears outscored N.C. A&T 20-13 at the foul line, including 14-6 in the second half.

MSU's Jennyffer Vargas finished with a double-double as she scored 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. She also blocked six shots and added four steals. Candace Holmes added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. Ms. Watson hit six three-pointers, while Johnson hit 10-of-16 from the foul line.

N.C. A&T made its last push with 2:17 remaining, as Camille Akins hit a jumper, then added a pair of free throws at 1:59 to put the Lady Aggies within three, 63-60. But on the ensuing MSU possession, Jennyffer Vargas made one of two free throws and teammate Javone Davis scooped up the offensive rebound and made a 15-footer for a six-point edge, ending the threat.

Yanumbe Sherman scored 22 points, including a season high tying six three-pointers, to lead N.C. A&T, which lost its ninth straight. Akins, playing her final game at Corbett Sports Center, scored 20 points.

MSU returns to action on Monday, March 1, 2004 to host the Lady Hawks of MD-Eastern Shore. Tip-time is set for 5:30p.m.
