Candace Holmes leads MSU with 13 point effort in win over Howard.
Box Score
The Morgan State University Lady Bears (2-20, 2-11 MEAC) held the Howard University Lady Bison (7-14, 7-5) to 21% shooting from the field, and forced 28 turnovers in beating HU 52-42 Saturday night at Hill Field House. It was the first win over Howard since 2001, and marked the first time Morgan State has defeated any opponent by double digits in three years.
Howard came into the game as one of the highest scoring teams in the MEAC, putting up nearly 70 points a game. But the Lady Bears held Howard to their lowest scoring output of the season.
MSU could have won by an even bigger margin if they would have done a better job at the charity stripe. Morgan hit only 8 of 26 free throws for the evening.
The Lady Bears now have two wins on the season. It's the first time MSU has been able to win more than a single game in a season since the 2000/01 campaign.
Morgan State was led by Candace Holmes who scored 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the field.
Latricia Jones had a big game, scoring eight points and grabbing a team high 11 rebounds.
Freshman Whitney Johnson had a 12 point night, while Sarissa Gaskins poured in 7 points, snatched 9 rebounds, and had five steals.
Junior Sharonda Watson enjoyed a strong floor game, handing out 5 assists for the night.
MSU matched HU basket for basket for much of the first half. The game was tied at 20-20 after a layup by MSU's Whitney Johnson with 5:27 remaining in the half. Howard would not score another field goal in the half and Morgan would never trail for the rest of the game.
The Lady Bear lead grew to 12 points on a bucket by Mikea Williams with 10:44 left in the contest. Howard would never seriously challenge again.
The Lady Bison were 7 of 29 from the field in the 1st half, and shot an anemic 6 of 34 or 18% in the 2nd half.
HU was led by Daisha Hicks with 16 points. Freshman Christina Aden had a 14 point game.
The Lady Bears will look for their first 2 game winning streak in 4 years when they host the Delaware State University Lady Hornets at Hill Field House on Monday, February 16, 2004. The game is set for a 5:30p.m. tip-time.
