Morgan State Rolls to 55-0 Shutout in Home Opener

BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 12, 2026) -- he Morgan State Bears unleashed a dominant offensive performance Saturday night, rolling past Virginia University of Lynchburg, 55-0, in their home opener at Hughes Stadium.
 
Morgan State scored touchdowns on four of its first five possessions and carried a commanding 28-0 advantage into halftime. The Bears continued their offensive assault after the break while the defense pitched its first shutout of the season.
 
Head coach Damon Wilson was pleased to see his team bounce back from last week's setback and open its home schedule with a decisive victory.
 
"It's good. Anytime you get a win, it's good. And for us to come home and open up a home season, it's good to get a win and get a shutout. I don't care who you're playing, and bounce back from the game from last week. It was good to see the guys play today."
 
Senior quarterback Cameron Edge opened the scoring with a short pass to sophomore Justin Perry, who snagged the ball with one hand and raced 13 yards for the touchdown. Alex Amaya's extra point gave the Bears a 7-0 lead.
 
Edge added another score late in the first quarter when he connected with sophomore Malachi Bryant for a 15-yard touchdown strike, extending the lead to 14-0.
 
Morgan added two more touchdowns in the second quarter. Edge found junior tight end Alex Simmons for a 10-yard touchdown before connecting with Perry for a 10-yard score, giving the Bears a 28-0 halftime advantage.
 
The Bears continued their offensive onslaught in the second half. Senior running back Jordan Barnett capped a nine-play, 73-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. The drive consumed 5:09 off the clock.
 
Backup quarterback Ade Olanegan then directed an 11-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Nick Williams, pushing the Bears' lead to 42-0.
 
Morgan's defense got into the scoring column early in the fourth quarter when Darius Searles intercepted a deflected pass and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown.
 
Senior quarterback Tahj Smith capped the scoring when he connected with sophomore wide receiver Maxim Copeland on a 43-yard touchdown pass, giving the Bears the 55-0 final.
 
Morgan finished with a season-high 522 total yards, including 387 through the air. Virginia-Lynchburg recorded 330 total yards.
 
Edge made the most of his third career start, completing 17 of 19 passes for 282 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 26 rushing yards on three carries.
 
Senior running back Jordan Barnett spearheaded the Bears' rushing attack with seven carries for 56 yards and a touchdown.
 
Perry continued his strong start to the season, hauling in six receptions for a season-high 122 yards and two touchdowns.
 
Wilson praised Perry's development and the impact he made in the home opener.
 
"Justin Perry's a young guy. He's going into his sophomore year. He's a guy that we're going to count on to get some things done, and he showed today that he has the skill set for us to kind of follow behind him."
 
Defensively, Jordan Jeudy recorded six tackles and a tackle for loss, while sophomore Donovan Moyer finished with six tackles and two sacks. Junior linebacker Dylan Davis added five tackles and recorded a 27-yard interception return.
 
For Virginia-Lynchburg, Max Zavala completed 16 of 25 passes for 151 yards and was sacked four times while throwing one interception. Joshua Soyemi led the Dragons with four receptions for 40 yards.
 
Defensively, Najahti Clark posted a team-high 12 tackles, while Tyson Woods added six stops.
 
Despite the lopsided victory, Wilson said the Bears still have areas to clean up heading into next week's matchup against Towson.
 
"We had too many penalties today defensively. We let them convert on too many third downs. Offensively, didn't turn the ball over, which is great. A lot of guys got some playing time, so we want to just minimize the penalties, make sure we continue to execute high third down efficiency offensively and get off the field on the defense."
 
With the home opener behind them, the Bears now turn their attention to a familiar non-conference opponent.
 
Morgan State will travel crosstown next Saturday to face the Towson Tigers in the annual Battle for Greater Baltimore. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Maryland.
