COUTREYER

Keith Coutreyer

Morgan University's men's basketball program has gained a valuable asset in Keith Coutreyer, who joins the staff as Assistant Coach/Director of Basketball Operations. Coutreyer brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent 15 years coaching in two highly competitive conferences: the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Big South Conference. His deep understanding of the intricacies of these conferences, coupled with his extensive coaching experience, will be invaluable as Morgan University strives for continued success on the court.

Coutreyer brings a wealth of experience in collegiate basketball. He most recently served as Chief of Staff at Maryland Eastern Shore during the 2023-24 season, demonstrating his leadership and organizational skills. Coutreyer previously honed his coaching abilities as an Assistant Coach at Hampton University, first in the Big South Conference from 2020-2022, and earlier in the MEAC from 2008-2010. This diverse background across different conferences and roles showcases his adaptability and understanding of the game at various levels.

During his nine-year tenure as Associate Head Coach of the Howard University men’s team, from 2010 to 2019, Coutreyer played a pivotal role in all aspects of program operations. Following a coaching change, Coutreyer transitioned to the role of Special Assistant to the Head Coach for the 2019/20 season. In this capacity, he continued to oversee the academic engagement program, ensuring student-athletes received the necessary support to excel both on and off the court. He also managed various administrative functions, providing crucial behind-the-scenes support for the program's smooth operation.

During his tenure at Howard, Coutreyer mentored some of the best Bison to ever walk through Burr Gymnasium during that decade, including R.J Cole, Kyle Foster, James Carlton, James Miller, James Daniel III and Charles Williams Howard Universities and The MEAC conference all-time leading scorer.

Coutreyer's legacy at Laurel High School extends far beyond the impressive win-loss record. While his 2008 PGCPS county and regional championships and state semifinal appearance are testaments to his coaching abilities, he views his true accomplishment as the positive impact he had on his players. He dedicated 13 years to the Spartans, nurturing their skills on the field and shaping their lives off it. His dedication resulted in 25 of his players earning spots on NCAA teams, demonstrating his commitment to their athletic and academic development. “Wins will be celebrated and then forgotten,” he said, “but the lives that you impact positively will last a lifetime.” He believes that his biggest accomplishment during his tenure at Laurel High School was helping young men move onto successful outcomes!

Coutreyer's journey through education is marked by a blend of academic achievement and athletic prowess. He began his academic career at Columbia Union College, graduating in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in journalism. While at Columbia Union, he showcased his athletic talent as a point guard for the men's basketball team, competing at both the NAIA Division I and NCAA Division II levels. His commitment to education continued beyond his undergraduate years. He later pursued a Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from Howard University, graduating in May 2018. He is also certified in Special Education.
