Brian Ellerbe

Brian Ellerbe enters his fourth season as assistant men's basketball coach at Morgan State and has over 30 years of coaching experience.

Ellerbe, a Maryland native has achieved many milestones including being the first African-American Head Coach at both Loyola University, Maryland and The University of Michigan.

At Michigan he guided the Wolverines to its first Big Ten Championship in 22 years capturing the Inaugural Big Ten Tournament Championship.

During his coaching career Brian Ellerbe has recruited and coached several student-athletes who’ve played in the NBA such as Bryant Stith (Denver Nuggets 92’) Cory Alexander (San Antonio Spurs 95’) Robert “Tractor” Traylor (Milwaukee Bucks 98’) and Jamal Crawford (Chicago Bulls 2000’).

Ellerbe’s impressive assistant coaching career includes; Graduate Assistant Coach at Rutgers, followed by assistant positions at Bowling Green, George Mason, Univ. of South Carolina, Univ. of Virginia, George Washington and DePaul. Several Ellerbe influenced teams have experienced NCAA Tournament Bids as well as an NIT Championship.

A prep star in both his junior and senior seasons, Brian Ellerbe was one of the leading scorers in the state earning All-Wash, D.C. Metropolitan Area honors and McDonald’s All-American, where he played in the McDonald’s Capital Classic All-Star Game with Hall-of-Famers Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing.

At the collegiate level Ellerbe was a 4-year starter at Rutgers on Scarlet Knight teams winning games in both the NCAA and NIT Tournaments. He still holds the record for the most assist in a college game at famed Madison Square Garden with 16. Off the court Coach Ellerbe graduated with his class earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning at Rutgers.

Equally impressive are the diversity of skills experiences Brian Ellerbe possesses. As an entrepreneur and business man he headed a team that developed an Educational Sports Complex model joining the City of Detroit and Detroit Public Schools. He later became managing general partner of Madison Grace Construction in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A passionate supporter for student-athletes and an active advocate for current and aspiring college basketball coaches, Brian Ellerbe is frequently involved with issues concerning minority growth in the profession.

Brian Ellerbe’s ties to Morgan State joins his sister Janice who holds both an undergraduate and master’s degree from Morgan State. Coach Ellerbe, his wife Kimberly and daughter Amelie reside in Maryland.
