The junior ranked No. 3 in the league with eight sacks and ranked T-No. 3 in tackles for loss (17; ranked T-No. 8 in FCS) and the defensive coaching staff, the Bears improved from seventh in rushing defense in 2016 to fifth in 2017 -- The Bears also ranked third in team sacks (28).

The following year, he joined Hoke's staff in a role working with the defensive linemen and stayed on when Jim Harbaugh took over for Hoke. The Wolverines' 2014 defense ranked No. 6 in the nation in total defense, and improved to No. 4 during a 2015 season in which the team tied a school record by pitching three consecutive shutouts.
