Omarr Smith returns to the Morgan State football program, where he serves as defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach under head coach Damon Wilson. Smith brings extensive coaching and playing experience to the Bears’ defensive staff, including previous experience at Morgan State and more than two decades of Arena Football League experience.
Smith returned to Morgan State in 2022 and served two seasons as the defensive backs coach under former head coach Tyrone Wheatley. He returned to the Bears’ coaching staff under Wilson and continued to oversee the development of Morgan State’s defensive backs during the 2025 season.
In 2025, Smith helped guide a veteran Morgan State secondary that produced several standout performances throughout the season. The Bears’ defensive backs played an important role in a Morgan State defense that helped the team earn victories over Miles College, Norfolk State, and Howard. The unit also contributed to Morgan State’s strong turnover production and defensive success throughout the season.
Smith spent three seasons as the head coach of the Baltimore Brigade of the Arena Football League. His start in the AFL came with the San Jose SaberCats, where he helped the team win three ArenaBowl championships between 2000 and 2008. He also spent one season with the Tampa Bay Storm in 2003, helping the team capture an ArenaBowl championship.
Smith began his coaching career in the af2 following his 2008 season as a defensive back with the San Jose SaberCats. He served as defensive coordinator for the Arizona Rattlers and later as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the San Jose SaberCats. His first head coaching opportunity came with the Los Angeles KISS in 2016, leading the club to a 7-9 record. Following the folding of the KISS franchise, Smith became head coach of the expansion Baltimore Brigade in 2017.
A native of Torrance, California, Smith attended Bishop Montgomery High School, where he earned all-league honors in football, basketball, and track. His athletic ability earned him a football scholarship to San Jose State University, where he played all four seasons and recorded 13 career interceptions, the second-most in school history.
After graduating from San Jose State, Smith joined the AFL and became a key contributor to three championship seasons with the San Jose SaberCats in 2002, 2004, and 2007. He also played for the Tampa Bay Storm during its 2003 championship season.
Smith concluded his nine-year AFL playing career with 35 interceptions, 88 pass breakups and eight defensive touchdowns. As both a player and assistant coach, Smith accumulated seven ArenaBowl championships, tying Tim Marcum for the most ArenaBowl victories by an individual affiliated with the AFL.
Smith’s extensive experience as both a defensive backs coach and former professional defensive back continues to provide Morgan State’s secondary with valuable expertise in defensive technique, pass coverage, and game preparation.
