Jerome Smith enters his first year as an assistant coach for the Bears and his first as a college coach. He will serve as the running back coach in 2019.
A native of Chester, Pa., Smith attended Syracuse and graduated in 2014 with a degree in Hospitality Management. He was a three-year lettermen as a running back for the Orange and ranked No. 13 on the school’s all-time rushing yards list. He also finished T-No. 9 in program history with eight 100-yard games.
Smith was an All-ACC Third Team selection and team captain in 2013. He was also a two-time Mark Hoffman Award winner that is awarded to the school’s best running back. He completed his career with 2,219 rushing yards,17 touchdowns in 39 career games and won back-to-back Pinstripe Bowl games. He went on to sign as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons for two seasons.
After his playing career was finished, Smith worked with young football players in Delaware as a trainer and at an area prep school.
