Derrick Alexander enters his second season at Morgan State as the team’s pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach.
Prior to joining Morgan State’s staff, Alexander spent three seasons at Avila University where he was the offensive coordinator coached the wide receivers. He entered the 2018 campaign as the OC after being promoted from Passing Game Coordinator following the 2017 season.
Before Avila, Alexander participated in NFLPA Coaching Internship for former professional football players, where he coached wide receivers for Wilmington College DII, Wilmington OH. In both 2017 and 2018, Alexander continued interning at the professional ranks, working most recently as an intern with the New York Jets during the 2018 NFL Preseason.
The Detroit, Michigan native played his collegiate football at the University of Michigan, where he led the team in receptions and receiving yards in his last two seasons. After a great college career, Alexander was the Cleveland Browns' first round draft pick in the 1994 NFL Draft. In his rookie season he led the playoff-bound Browns in receiving. He then joined the Baltimore Ravens for the 1996 and 1997 seasons where he had two consecutive 1,000 yard seasons. He is the Ravens all-time leader in yards-per reception (16.6).
Alexander then joined the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent in 1998, where in his first year with the team he led in receiving yards. In 2000, he set a team record for receiving yards in a season, with 1,391. The Chiefs' quarterback that year was his former Michigan teammate, Elvis Grbac. Also, in 2000 he was named the Team MVP and the Chiefs Derrick Thomas Award Winner.
Alexander has a degree in Sports Management and Communication from the University of Michigan.
