Antone' Sewell enters his fifth season as Morgan State’s assistant head coach and defensive coordinator under head coach Damon Wilson. Sewell also oversees the Bears’ safeties and has played a key role in the development of Morgan State’s defense since joining the program in 2022.
In 2025, Sewell continued to lead the Bears’ defense while adding responsibility for the safeties. Morgan State finished the season with a 4-8 overall record and a 1-4 mark in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Bears recorded four victories during the season, including shutout victories over Central State and Virginia University of Lynchburg, as well as conference wins over Norfolk State.
Under Sewell’s direction, the 2025 Morgan State defense produced several strong individual performances. The Bears entered the season with 11 players earning preseason All-MEAC recognition, including defensive back Jadon Carter, linebacker Erick Hunter and defensive lineman Dashawn Fields.
Sewell came to Morgan State after serving as defensive coordinator at Division II perennial power Bowie State, where he worked under Wilson. Bowie State allowed an average of just under 14 points per game in 2021 as it claimed its third consecutive CIAA championship. The Bulldogs’ 2021 campaign represented Sewell’s best defensive showing at Bowie State and ranked among the nation’s top defensive performances.
During his tenure at Bowie State, Sewell helped coach four NCAA statistical champions and four CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year winners. He also coached the 2019 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year and 2019 HBCU Gameday Defensive Player of the Year. In 2021, he helped coach the AFCA Division II Defensive Player of the Year while helping Bowie State host and win its first NCAA Division II playoff game.
Sewell spent five seasons in the Southwestern Athletic Conference on Henry Frazier’s Prairie View A&M coaching staffs during the mid-2000s.
Upon completing his degree from Bowie State University as a member of the Honors Program in 2003, Sewell began his coaching career at Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, Georgia. He spent one season as a graduate assistant on the FVSU coaching staff, assisting with the defensive backs.
A four-year letterman at Bowie State, Sewell was named the team’s Defensive MVP in 2001 after helping the Bulldogs to a 7-3 record. Following a productive senior season in 2002, in which Bowie State advanced to the CIAA Championship Game, he earned Second Team All-CIAA honors.
A native of New Carrollton, Maryland, Sewell earned a bachelor’s degree from Bowie State University and a master’s degree in counseling from Prairie View A&M University. He has participated in several prestigious coaching development programs, including the 2009 NCAA Football Coaches Academy in Indianapolis, Indiana; the 2011 NCAA Expert Coaches Academy in Orlando, Florida; and the 2016 NCAA-NFL Coaches Academy in Tampa, Florida.
Sewell’s extensive coaching background, combined with his experience as a former collegiate defensive back and his long-standing relationship with Wilson, has made him an important part of the Bears’ defensive leadership and player-development efforts.
