Student-Athlete Spotlight: Ian McBorrough, Football

Baltimore product Ian McBorrough understands what means to be a true student-athlete. The 6-foot-2 sophomore linebacker interned at the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, Missouri.

“I am very serious about being a Business major at Morgan State,” said McBorrough. “I’m aspiring to have a 3.5 grade point average. I was blessed with the opportunity to intern in Kansas City and I was able to network with several professionals and became attracted to the field of financial advising. I’m looking forward to interning as a financial advisor with a bank in the Baltimore area.”

McBorrough understands how to balance and maximize his academics with also being a stellar athlete for the Bears.

“You have to sacrifice some things like sleep and going out. If you focus and set your mind on the important things, you will be a successful student-athlete.”

Ian also understands how to flip the switch from being a productive student-athlete both on and off the field.

“My personality definitely changes, when I'm a student,” McBorrough explained. “I’m quiet and friendly, but when I get on the field I want to kill anything that’s in front of me, and I am flying around with a lot of energy.”

McBorrough’s role has changed due to some players being injured and other circumstances. He has been asked to be a leader on the defense and has been a focal point for the Bears.

“It’s different; now I'm expected to do things I wasn't expected to do before. Also, not just making sure I’m making plays, but that everybody around me is in the right place [on the field]. Being a leader on the team you have to hold everybody accountable in every aspect, especially academically, because you need everyone to be eligible.”

McBorrough is currently fourth on the team with 28 total tackles and 21 solo stops, including an interception and four tackles for loss.

McBorrough has played a key role in a Bears defensive unit that currently ranks T-No. 2 in the FCS in tackles for loss (73) and ranks T-No. 2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in sacks (22).
