MEAC Teleconference Week 2

Question: “Coach first game last week against Air Force talk a little bit about your team’s performance and matchup?”

Lee Hull: “It was a tough matchup. We are a very young team we brought forty freshman and sophomores to the game. Air Force is a great team. The altitude was something to deal with, as well as their fast paced offense, that kind of wore us down. I think the guys fought for sixty minutes and didn’t give up, but it obviously wasn’t the outcome we wanted.”

Q: “Moses Skillon converted on 13 of 25 pass for 142 yards, can you assess the play of his first game? “

LH: “ I think Moses had a decent command of the offense. There were a couple plays that we’d like to have back. He fumbled the ball and we work on ball security everyday so he has to do a better job with his ball security. He had one pick which really wasn’t his fault, the receiver didn’t block the right man and it ended up being a pick six. But I thought he had a pretty decent command in the first game going up against a tough opponent.”

Q: “Looking ahead this week you’ll play Illinois State, what’s the outlook heading into this matchup?”

LH: “Illinois State is a great team. They lost in the national championship game so they were the runners-up. Their quarterback and running back are special and they have a high potent offense. Their defense is very good, they don’t do a whole lot, they are pretty simple. They have a transfer from Ohio State (No. 4) that’s a really good football player, so it’s going to be a tough matchup for us.”

Q: “What was the impact of losing the guys last week in terms of not being able to have them for Saturdays game?”

LH: “It was a big impact. Like I said, we brought forty freshman and sophomores. We were just short-handed, playing a great offensive attack like that. They are a great team. They won 10 games the last two or three years in a row, so we were just short-handed.”

Q: “How disappointed were you that your players weren’t there due to a University snafu and not injuries or anything?”

LH: “ Well obviously, just losing that many players during the week of the game… it’s hard. Regardless of what the situation is, it was just tough trying to get prepared for a game, especially against an opponent like Air Force.”

Q: “ How concerned were you with the team’s depth in that game?”

LH: “Very concerned about the depth of our team. We were one deeper playing a lot of young guys true freshman and true sophomores, in some cases redshirt freshman. We didn’t have a lot of depth, so I was very concerned with that. But one positive is that we came out injury free which is good.”

Q: “Did you have tryouts on Thursday to try and get some new players? “

LH: “No. We had a tryout on Thursday, but we have that tryout the same time every year. The first day of school we post walk-on tryouts, we give them about a week to get all their forms in and we always hold it on that second Thursday. It had nothing to do with lack of depth this is something we do every year.”

Q: “How do you assess the play of Orlando Johnson and Lamont Brown at tailback?”

LH: “I thought they did a good job. They had limited carries. One thing they were trying to do was take away our run game and make Moses a runner. That’s why Moses had a lot of carries. This game I think he had 18 carries. But for the limited amount of carries they had I thought they did a great job.”

Q: “Lamont [Brown] had the better numbers, do you think he is in the lead to start on Saturday?

LH: “ No. We watched the film, it’s not based on that. It’s based on what they did without the football as far as protection. It has a lot of factors, but right now we’ll see how practice goes this week.”

Q: “ Particularly what did you see from Orlando and what did you see from Lamont?

LH: “ Orlando is very tough to bring down he’s got some explosion, some speed, he’s a good pass protector, and he had a big 20 yard catch out of the backfield. Lamont did a good job in protection. He did better than he usually has been in the past, so that was a bright spot for me to see him get in there and pass protect. He did a good job running the ball and hitting the hole, so both of them bring some stuff to the table.”
