Question: “Can you assess your teams’ performance against Howard this weekend?”
Lee Hull: “I thought they are getting better each week. We are getting better and better. You can see we have a young team, but each week they are gaining confidence and it showed this week. We started off fast in the first half, but we have to play better in the second half. We have to learn how to finish games. We were up 21-0 and we fumbled the ball that was returned for a touchdown, and we didn’t score in the second half and the defense gave up two field goals. We are a young team, so we are still learning and growing but I like how they did compete, and they did finish on our own terms. With 5:50 left to go, we had the ball on offense and went down and ran the time out, so I did like how we finished on our own terms.”
Q: “Talk about the character and make-up of this team from your perspective?”
LH: “I think we are showing great character. We don’t have a lot of seniors, but the nine seniors we have are showing great leadership. They are on our player’s counsel and they are beginning to buy into what we are doing. Finishing on our own terms this past week shows great character, we are improving and I like the way we are headed.”
Q: “Looking ahead this week you play Delaware State. Can you talk about this pending matchup?”
LH: “Coach Carter is a great coach. He has a lot of experience and he will have his guys ready to go. He is in a situation like I was last year, a first year head coach still trying to find their identity and still trying to get the players to buy into his system and his vision for the program. You can tell on film they are improving every week, so I expect this to be a great matchup. We will be ready to go and I believe the guys returning from last year will remember the game. They will be coming to get us.”
Q: “October is breast cancer awareness month how do you think athletics can bring to bring awareness to breast cancer and the importance of that role?”
LH: “I think it is very important especially because everyone has female family members and friends who could be affected by breast cancer. It’s important for us to bring awareness to that, and for us to participate in bringing awareness to this issue.”
Q: “How are you guys responding to wearing the pink accessories this week?”
LH: “They embrace this opportunity. Last year we even had pink towels and things of that sort and we weren’t allowed to wear them. The players definitely embrace it and they look forward to wearing it and bringing awareness to breast cancer.”
Q: “How good of a feeling is it to win your conference opener?”
LH: “Its Huge! It’s important to get some confidence, especially with us being a young team. We understand this is going to be a tough conference to win. Last year there were five teams that were in first place at the end of the year. Every game is important and it’s very important to get off to a fast start.”
Q: “You mentioned Delaware State. They had a bye last weekend does that give them an advantage because they had time to rest?”
LH: “Yes, it gives them a bit of a advantage. They had two weeks to prepare for us. Like you said, they had a bye and got a lot of rest and I know coach Carter is going to have them ready and will have a good game plan. We only have one week, but we have to prepare as always. We will put our best game plan together and go out and play the game.”
Q: “The offense scored 21 points in that first half and was shutout in the second half. From your perspective what factors did you see that contributed to the second half?
LH: “Just not executing. We didn’t execute like we did in the first half, missed a couple of reads by the quarterback… I thought we could have had a couple extra big plays, but we had a few penalties that pushed us back and got us off track a little bit. So I think we have to be more consistent. We kind of inhaled, exhaled a bit and couldn’t get back on track after that.”
Q: “Can you talk about Lamont Brown III and how he played?”
LH: “He did a good job of getting the ball outside and making people miss. I would still like to see him hit the inside a little more. He is getting better each week and you can see that in his confidence. He’s blocking better, so I look forward to seeing him play the rest of the year.”
