MEAC Teleconference - Donald Hill-Eley - Week 3

MEAC TELECONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT
WEEK 3 – Sept. 10, 2013
MSU Head coach Donald Hill-Eley

Q - Talk about the game versus Robert Morris...

COACH DONALD HILL-ELEY : “It was one of those games when whatever could go wrong did. Offensively we sputtered early on, even ended up going down to our third string quarterback in hopes of finding out who the guy would be to get things moving. By that time however it was too late. We also found ourselves again in a penalty-ridden situation all of which will be addressed today in practice. It really wasn't a clean enough game to win. Robert Morris came to play the team they saw on film up against Army. I guess we figured they were going to roll over, but that just didn't happen.“

Q - Talk about Moses ...

COACH HILL : “Well it got to the point where they say if you got two [QBs] you don't have one, if you got three you don't have none. But Moses [Skillon] was the guy that has been here, redshirted. We figured we'd put him in to build some kind of momentum because the other two really weren't clicking and motivating the guys around them. At that position you have to have guys that the other guys can feed off of. [Robert] Council had four early turnovers and really never got out of that slump, then Seth [Higgins] came in and missed a couple throws. We put Moses in because we thought that if we could get a spark at that position we could do something. When he went out he was a true freshman. He had a few miscues, but as he settled down he was the best we had in the pocket and delivered the ball.”

Q - Does his style of play  force the offensive line to adjust seeing as he is a pocket pressure....

COACH HILL : “Yes, he's a pocket passer but he can escape. The good thing about it is he's going to be in the pocket more, which allows the offensive line to have more leverage inside. It's good in one phase, bad in the other; schematically you have to lock down the perimeter so that the defense doesn't send blitz packages knowing he's settled in the pocket. Unlike Council, who loves to get out on the edge and extend plays. Moses has the potential to step up and deliver from the pocket. Whatever guy we decide to use come Saturday, we will adjust our scheme to fit his style of play.”

Q - Is this week of practice somewhat of a competition?

COACH HILL: “It's kind of late to have an open competition, but what we'll do is continue to review film and base out decision off of that. We will focus on the best two out of the three quarterbacks that we have, hopefully by the end of the week we'll know exactly who will lead us in the game on Saturday.”

Q - You all got into penalty trouble again in this game, can you talk about how you plan to fix that again?

COACH HILL:  “The thing that I'm challenging the team to do is not get as many penalties. Penalties for being offsides and not having enough guys on the line of scrimmage, those penalties are cerebral. We just need to stay focused and pay closer attention to detail.”
