Morgan State Men’s Basketball Tame Wolves in Season Opener

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 2, 2026) – The Morgan State men's basketball team opened its 2026-27 campaign in impressive fashion Monday night, rolling to a 103-52 victory over Cheyney University of Pennsylvania in the Bears' home opener at Hill Field House.

Morgan State (1-0) showcased its depth, defensive intensity and offensive firepower, holding the Wolves to just 22.7 percent shooting from the field while dominating the glass, 62-34. The victory marked a strong start for the Bears, who look to build on last season's success and position themselves for a run at the MEAC championship.

Alfred Worrell Jr. paced the Bears with a game-high 27 points, knocking down six three-pointers, while newcomer Ibrahima Traore made an immediate impact inside with 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. Keith Richard added 15 points and dished out a game-high nine assists to direct the Morgan State offense.

The Bears established control early, building a 50-25 halftime advantage before continuing to pull away in the second half. Morgan State's defensive pressure and dominance in the paint proved too much for Cheyney to overcome.

OPENING TIP

NOTE THE QUOTE

HEAD COACH KEVIN BROADUS ON THE SEASON OPENER AND TEAM PERFORMANCE
"We handled the moment well. Holding a team to 21 percent shooting from the field and grabbing 62 rebounds is a good start. But as I told the team, it's not going to be this easy every night. We're a work in progress, and this isn't the team you're going to see in March. We have to continue getting better every day. As long as we're learning to share the ball, play defense, trust one another and have each other's backs, we have a chance to be a good team."

ON KEITH RICHARD'S PERFORMANCE AT POINT GUARD
"Keith is the heart and soul of this team right now, much like Elijah Davis was last season. We need him to play big, and he did a good job tonight. He finished with nine assists, which is exactly what we're looking for, and his defense was really good."

ON ALFRED WORRELL JR.'S ALL-AROUND PERFORMANCE
"He was better defensively tonight and really good on that end of the floor. He just has to stay focused and continue doing the things we need on both ends of the court, not just offensively."

ON IBRAHIMA TRAORE'S IMPACT
"Ibi came here with a mission. He's one of the best rebounders we've seen in a long time, and his defensive presence makes a tremendous difference. We just have to keep him healthy and on the floor. If we can do that, we'll be in good shape."

ALFRED WORRELL JR. ON RETURNING FOR HIS FIFTH SEASON
"Just knowing how close we were last year motivates me. Obviously, it's a blessing to be back, especially after everything I went through with my eligibility. This is actually my fifth year, and I'm just grateful for the opportunity to be back playing at Hill Field House. I'm truly thankful to the Lord for allowing me to be here."

ON HIS ALL-AROUND PERFORMANCE
"I feel like I played really well defensively, especially on the ball. I was able to make some hustle plays, get a steal, and come up with a block. I thought I had a well-rounded game and was able to get my teammates involved as well. Overall, it was a great team win."

IBRAHIMA TRAORE ON HIS GOALS FOR HIS FIRST SEASON WITH THE BEARS
"My goal this year is to win a championship. I heard the team came pretty close last season, and I want us to take that next step and bring home a championship."

ON HIS PLAYING STYLE
"I play with a lot of energy. I would describe my game as similar to Bam Adebayo, who is my favorite player. He's someone I try to model my game after."

ON HIS DEFENSIVE MINDSET
"I pride myself on helping cover for our guards and protecting the paint. I'm always looking to get as many blocks as possible and bring energy on the defensive end."

UP NEXT
Morgan State will return to action Wednesday, Nov. 4, when the Bears host Virginia University of Lynchburg at Hill Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
