Bears Sweep Visiting S.C. State

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 1, 2026)--On Sunday the Morgan State Bears opened the month of November with a home matchup versus the South Carolina State Bulldogs. The Bears looked to get back in the win column coming off a three-set loss to North Carolina Central. The Bears would do exactly that returning with a three-set victory of their own 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-20) against the Bulldogs in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match on the MEAC Network.

Morgan State improved to 8-15, 7-4 in the MEAC, while S.C. State dropped to 6-21, 1-9 MEAC. The win was just the third this season at home for the Bears, who ended a two-match losing skid at Hill Field House.

Set 1 was all Morgan and saw Jada Williams record a team-leading five kills and a block in the opening set. After an initial 3-3 tie the Bears went on a run of six straight points to push the lead to 9-3. South Carolina State couldn't close the distance. Outside hitter Carra Pierre-Louis led the Bulldogs with three kills and a couple of digs in the frame with outside hitter Kenna Harris right behind with two kills of her own in the set. A kill from Michaela Panekova assisted by Isabelle Brown, ended the opening set with a resounding 25-13 victory. Zayda Thomas and Hanna Nemeth both added four kills a piece with Thomas contributing a block as well. Freshman Bailey Swinton also had an impressive set, recording a team leading six digs.

Set 2 saw both teams go back-and-forth early in the frame. Down 6-4, Morgan State would again go on a run, this time sparked by three consecutive kills by Panekova all being assisted by Brown. The Bears pushed the lead to 10-6 and didn't relinquish it for the remainder of the set. Panekova would have eight kills in the second set alone, as the Bears would win, 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Morgan kept its foot on the gas in Set 3 claiming the first four points and holding the lead wire to wire. However, the Bulldogs would show resilience after going down 18-10. South Carolina State would respond and cut the deficit to just two points at 20-18. The Bears weathered the storm and ended the final set with Nemeth's team-leading 12th kill of the match. Execution on both sides of the ball led to a resounding sweep for the Bears today, as well as a season sweep of the South Carolina State.

Morgan State finished the contest posting 50 kills and hitting .433 as a team. Williams hit a match-high .733 with 11 kills, while Panekova also finished with 11 kills and hit .556. Brown collected a match-high 38 assists and tied Williams with a match-best three service aces.

South Carolina State was paced by Kenna Harris, who had a match-high 12 kills and hit .571 for the Bulldogs. Arianna James finished with 16 assists and hit .571 with five kills, while Ki'ra Wright collected 10 digs.

Morgan State will be in search of securing another season sweep when it travels to Dover, Del., on Friday, Nov. 6 to face Delaware State in a crucial MEAC contest at Memorial Hall. First serve is at 6 p.m. and will air live on the MEAC Network. The Hornets (17-8, 8-3 MEAC), which are in the midst of a five-match winning streak, are coming off a 3-1 win at Norfolk State on Sunday.
