Morgan State Falls to South Carolina State in MEAC Showdown at Hughes Stadium

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 29, 2026) --  Morgan State's bid to get back on track in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play came up short Thursday night, as the Bears suffered a 51-10 setback against South Carolina State at Hughes Stadium.

The Bulldogs used a balanced attack and a dominant second half to pull away, scoring 30 unanswered points in the final two quarters.

South Carolina State struck first, building a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on touchdown runs from Josh Shaw and a five-yard touchdown reception by Martavious Collins from quarterback Keely Watson.

Morgan State responded in the second quarter with a momentum-shifting defensive play. Defensive back Raquane Matthews recovered a South Carolina State fumble and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown to put the Bears on the scoreboard, cutting the deficit to 14-7 with 14:52 remaining in the first half.

The Bears continued to chip away at the deficit as Alex Amaya connected on a 30-yard field goal, capping a 13-play, 62-yard drive to make it a 14-10 contest with 5:10 remaining in the half.

However, the Bulldogs answered just before halftime when Watson connected with Troy Hillman on a 20-yard touchdown pass as time expired, sending South Carolina State into the break with a 21-10 advantage.

The Bulldogs seized control in the second half. After opening the third quarter with a 35-yard field goal, South Carolina State capitalized on a Morgan State fumble to extend its lead. Watson later connected with DJ Maultsby on a 10-yard touchdown pass to push the advantage to 30-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

South Carolina State added three more touchdowns in the final period, including scoring passes to Shamontae Burgess and rushing touchdowns by Ronnie Robinson and Kacy Fields to account for the final margin.

Watson completed 27 of 36 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs, who finished with 509 yards of total offense, including 213 on the ground.

Morgan State quarterback Cameron Edge completed 17 of 28 passes for 144 yards, while Ade Olanegan added four completions for 18 yards in relief. The Bears were held to 150 yards of total offense, including minus-12 yards rushing.

Justin Perry led the Bears with five catches for 72 yards, while Alex Simmons (31 yds) and Quavel Thornton (17 yds) added three receptions apiece.

Raquane Matthews provided the Bears' lone touchdown with his fumble recovery return, while Amaya accounted for the remaining three points with his second-quarter field goal.

Darius Jones finished with a game-high 10 tackles, with a tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Jordan Jeudy added six tackles and 1.5 sacks, while Mike Hastie had five stops, a tackle for loss, and a forced fumble.

Following the game, head coach Damon Wilson acknowledged the Bears' strong first-half effort but pointed to the touchdown surrendered just before halftime and the team's inability to generate offense as pivotal factors in the loss.

"I think we played well in the first half. It was a ball game, but giving up that touchdown right before halftime definitely hurt us. Offensively, we didn't score the ball at all. The only touchdown we got came from the defense. We understand we're down some guys right now, but at the end of the day, the next man has to step up and make plays. We just didn't do well enough in any phase today," said Wilson.

Morgan State will look to regroup as it continues its MEAC schedule in the closing stretch of the 2026 season. The Bears will face the Delaware State Hornets next Saturday (Nov. 7) in Dover.
