Morgan State Men’s Basketball Fends Off Delaware State Rally in 80–79 Road Win

DOVER, Del. (Jan. 17, 2026) – Morgan State senior guard Walter Peggs Jr. poured in a game-high 29 points as the Bears held off a late rally from Delaware State to secure an 80–79 victory in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action Saturday night at Memorial Hall.

Morgan State led by as many as 18 points before holding off a late push from Delaware State to secure the win. With the victory, the Bears improved to 5–13 overall and 2–2 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play. The Hornets fell to 5–14 on the season and 0–4 in conference action.

OPENING TIP
• Peggs scored 23 of his game- and season-high 29 points in the first half, shooting 8-for-17 from the field, and 7-for-12 from beyond the arc in 37 minutes off the bench.
Rob Lawson finished with 13 points (4-10 FG) in 25 minutes, while Elijah Davis added eight points and six assists. Christian Meeks chipped in six points and seven rebounds.
• Ponce James led Delaware State with 22 points, knocking down six three-pointers, while Rahmir Moore added 20 points on 5-of-9 shooting to pace the Hornets. Jalen StClair added eight points.

THE DIFFERENCE
• Morgan State shot 41 percent (25-of-60) from the field and went 10-of-24 from three-point range. DSU shot 45 percent overall and shot 4-of-15 from deep.
• The Bears converted 74 percent (20-of-27) from the free-throw line, while the DSU shot a 69 percent (27-of-39).
• The Hornets pulled in 11 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded the Bears by a 39-32 margin.
• DSU outscored the Bears 28-20 inside the paint.
• DSU opened the game on a 5–0 run, with Ademar Santos going 3-of-4 at the free-throw line and Ponce James knocking down a pull-up jumper. Marland Harris quickly found himself in foul trouble, picking up two early fouls.
• Alfred Worrell checked in for Alvin at the 18:08 mark, while Oliver entered for Harris shortly after. The Hornets held a slim 5–4 edge at the first stoppage before extending the margin to 9–4 at the first media timeout.
• Morgan State responded as Rob Lawson buried a pull-up jumper to spark the Bears. Walter Peggs Jr. then connected on a 3-pointer to cap a 7–0 run, giving Morgan its first lead at 11–9.
• The teams traded leads over the next three minutes before Peggs began to heat up. He drilled a triple to push Morgan ahead 25–20, igniting a surge in which he accounted for the bulk of the Bears' offense. Peggs later buried a deep three to stretch the advantage to 36–28 with 4:12 remaining in the half.
• Riding Peggs' hot hand, Worrell followed with a deep three of his own to give Morgan a 39–28 cushion — its largest lead of the game. Delaware State answered, trimming the deficit to nine at 39–30 with under three minutes to play.
• Peggs was then fouled on a three-point attempt and calmly converted all three free throws to make it 41–30 at the 2:25 mark, giving him 21 points at the time — accounting for roughly half of Morgan State's scoring.
• The Hornets closed the half on an 8–2 run, heading into the break trailing 44–38. Peggs capped a sensational opening stanza with 23 points, scoring nearly half of the Bears' total in the first half.
• Morgan State maintained its momentum to open the second half, as Harris powered through contact for a dunk and completed the three-point play to push the lead back to 14, 52–38, with 16:18 remaining. Harris then came up with a block on the defensive end, sparking a fastbreak finished by Alvin to extend the advantage to 54–38.
• The lead ballooned to 18 points when Elijah Davis scored in the paint to make it 56-38. The Hornets didn't score their first points of the half until free throws with 14:10 remaining.
Delaware State made a late push to pull within single digits after Rahmir Moore completed a three-point play with 8:14 remaining to make it 64–59. The teams traded baskets before Rob Lawson knocked down a three-pointer to give Morgan State a 72–64 lead with 6:27 to play.
• The Hornets continued to chip away, cutting the margin to 72–66 at the five-minute mark and later to 72–68 with under four minutes remaining. Christian Meeks fouled out at 3:52 as the Hornets kept the pressure on.
• James connected on a three-pointer to pull the Hornets within two, 73–71, with three minutes left, and later tied the game at 75–75 with 1:03 remaining. Elijah Davis answered by calmly sinking two free throws with 52.8 seconds left to put the Bears ahead for good.
• Lawson sealed the win at the line in the final seconds, and Morgan State survived a last-gasp inbound attempt to secure the 80–79 road victory.
