Reunited: Coach Domond Adds Murray, Pierre to Staff

BALTIMORE, Md. - Morgan State women's basketball head coach Nadine Domond arrived at the National Treasure in May and already had a vision for her staff. She didn't have to search too far to find Freddie Murray and David Pierre - in fact, all she had to do was pick up the phone and essentially say "The Band is Back Together Again!".

This time, the trio will be taking the sideline at Hill Fieldhouse. It wasn't that long ago that the group was together at Grambling State. Domond was the head coach of the Lady Tigers from 2014-16.

The 2015-16 season, her second year as head coach, was a memorable one. The Lady Tigers earned an overall record of 17-14 and a 13-5 conference mark. Domond was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and coached SWAC Freshman of the Year Jazmine Boyd and National HBCU Freshman of the Year Shakyla Hill. Hill was also selected as a second Team BOXTOROW All-American. The accolades were great that season, but it was the experience of coaching with friends that made it even more special.

One of Domond's first hires was Pierre. He came on staff as an assistant coach in 2014 and helped Domond to corral the troops and survey the landscape for what was needed to turn around a team that had won 11 games the prior season. After a year of conditioning, recruiting, coaching, and developing it was year two that set the stage for the winning season. Murray, a veteran coach, arrived at Grambling prior to the 2015-16 season and just in time. He made such a positive impact and fit right into the internal workings of the coaching staff.

What a year 2015-16 was! With Domond at the helm, Murray and Pierre on staff, and the vision board on deck, it was time to put it all in play. With the plays set, jerseys hung, work in the weight room put in, there was nothing left but to see your work play out.

Game after game, Domond, her staff and team were battle tested, but they rose to the occasion and made it all count.

Now, they're together in Baltimore. The National Treasure and home to Morgan State Women's Basketball.

More on Murray…
After Domond's departure Murray was named the interim head coach. For the 2016-2017 season he coached point guard Shakyla Hill to First Team All-SWAC honors and BOXTOROW First Team All-American honors. Jazmin Boyd was selected as a Second Team All-SWAC pick for the 2016-2017 season. He and the Lady Tigers went on a stretch of winning 10 straight conference games. It aided in them earning a share of the regular season SWAC Championship for the first time since 2000 with a record of 14-4 in conference play and an overall record of 18-14, earning the No. 1 seed in the SWAC Tournament. Grambling would win both of its first two SWAC tournament games by double digits, and make its first appearance in the SWAC title game 17 years. Murray was named the full-time head coach and held that role for six seasons. The Jackson State alum arrives in Baltimore with a heart full of orange and gold and ready to coach a new set of players, as he will hold the role of assistant coach/chief of staff.
