Carruthers, Roberts Receive 2025 MEAC Postgraduate Scholarship

NORFOLK, Va., July 3, 2025 — Morgan State's Trinity Carruthers and Darrien Roberts have been named recipients of the 2025 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Postgraduate Scholarship.

Carruthers and Roberts have earned a significant distinction, becoming the ninth and tenth individuals from the institution to receive the prestigious award since its establishment in 2000. This milestone not only celebrates their individual academic and athletic accomplishments but also highlights a remarkable trend for Morgan State.

For the second consecutive year, the university has been the recipient of both the male and female components of this highly regarded scholarship, underscoring its consistent commitment to fostering excellence and recognizing the well-rounded success of its student-athletes.

"We are incredibly proud of both Trinity and Darrien, two outstanding student-athletes here at Morgan, for being awarded MEAC Postgraduate Scholarship honors," said Morgan State Vice President/Director of Athletics, Dena Freeman-Patton. "Their achievements reflect the very best of what it means to be a true student-athlete. Their hard work, leadership, and commitment to excellence have not only brought pride to our university, but also paved the way for bright futures beyond the field of play."

A native of Grand Prairie, Texas, Carruthers was a four-year setter for the Morgan State women's volleyball team. She graduated with a degree in nursing and plans to focus on labor and delivery. Her vision is to empower women by ensuring they receive the care and respect during such a pivotal time.

Carruthers was named to the MEAC Commissioner's All-Academic Team from 2022 to 2024 and also earned MEAC Volleyball All-Academic honors. On the court, she totaled 1,242 career assists along with 60 kills, 42 service aces, 316 digs, and 58 blocks. She ranks 10th in assists on the Morgan State career charts.

Roberts, a member of the Morgan State wrestling team, graduated with a degree in project management. As the male recipient of the MEAC Postgraduate Scholarship, he plans to attend Law School to become an attorney focused on criminal justice reform.

In his lone season with the Bears, the Bethlehem, Pa., native posted a 12-6 record in the 174-pound weight class, including an impressive 8-2 mark in dual meets with seven wins by decision. His victories came against opponents from Campbell, Newberry, North Carolina, Glenville State, Lehigh, Marymount, VMI, Maryland, Army, Sacred Heart, American, and LIU.

"It is a privilege to present these postgraduate scholarships, which support our student-athletes as they take the next step toward achieving their professional goals," said Commissioner Sonja Stills. "These individuals have exemplified excellence in the classroom and in competition, and we are proud to honor their commitment, leadership, and drive. As MEAC alumni, they carry forward a legacy of impact and inspiration, and we look forward to their continued success in the next chapter of their journey."

Established in 2000 by the MEAC Delegate Assembly, the MEAC Postgraduate Scholarship program honors student-athletes who have demonstrated excellence both academically and athletically. Each year, one male and one female student-athlete are selected to receive a $5,000 scholarship to support their pursuit of advanced degrees. Recipients must be in their final season of eligibility and have competed with distinction as members of a MEAC varsity sports program.
