BALTIMORE, Md. (March 16, 2025)--Morgan State concluded its three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) season opening series against Delaware State on Sunday morning with a 7-6 loss at Lois T. Murray Field.
The Hornets improved to 10-10, 2-1 MEAC, while Morgan State dropped to 4-17, 1-2 MEAC.
It was the Lady Bears' first MEAC series loss in their last nine conference series. The last time Morgan State lost a MEAC series was April 15-16, 2023, against Maryland Eastern Shore.
The Hornets, who scored seven runs on 14 hits, took advantage of Morgan State errors and put up four runs in the opening inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Morgan State got a run back in the bottom of the first, when
Cassie White singled to left field to score
Amber Rivas to cut the deficit to 4-1. The Lady Bears got closer with another run in the second when Rivas singled to right field to bring in
Olivia Garner to make it a 4-2 game.
Delaware State extended its lead to 5-2 when Ashlyn Schmidt singled in Mi'Shon King in the top of the third to give the guests the three-run advantage.
The Hornets lead would be short lived, as Morgan State responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take its first lead of the day at 6-5.
Gianna Ettore doubled down the leftfield line to score
Nia Lewis for the first run and
Morgan Harrell-Alvarez's single, coupled with a throwing error by the shortstop, plated
Jayla Campos and
Tonya Marks to even the score at 5-5.
Alison Keener then singled to score Alvarez and give Morgan its first lead at 6-5.
Morgan State's lead would hold up until the fifth inning when Delaware State's Laila Hasan singled to center to score Annalisse Santana and tie the game at 6-6.
The Hornets then took the lead for good in the top of the seventh when Santana doubled down the leftfield line to score Emma Crowe for what would be the game winner.
Delaware State was led by Santana, who was 3-for-4 with a game-high three RBI. Crowe went 2-for-4 with two runs, while King finished 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Kristin White, who got the win for the Hornets, pitched five innings in relief, surrendering four runs on five hits, three walks and struck out a game-high six batters.
