BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 5, 2025) -- As February kicks off, we are thrilled to celebrate the 39th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) on February 5, 2025. This annual celebration recognizes the incredible achievements of female athletes and emphasizes the importance of sports participation for women and girls.
National Girls & Women in Sports Day is an opportunity to highlight the strides made toward gender equality in sports while also acknowledging the work still needed to ensure that every woman and girl has equal access to the benefits of athletic involvement.
From fostering leadership and confidence to promoting physical and mental well-being, sports play a vital role in shaping strong, empowered individuals. This day not only honors the trailblazing women who have paved the way but also inspires the next generation to pursue their dreams and break barriers.
At Morgan State, we are incredibly proud to support and empower female athletes through our nine all-female sports teams. These teams represent a diverse group of over 100 talented women who not only excel in their respective sports but also serve as role models and leaders both on and off the field.
Their hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence are a testament to the power of women in sports. Through these teams, we create an environment where female athletes can thrive, develop their skills, and build lasting bonds with one another. We celebrate their achievements and the positive impact they have on the Morgan State community and beyond.
A'Lycia Moore, a junior on the Acrobatics and Tumbling team, has found that sports are not just an activity but a foundational force that has shaped who she is today. From her early years to her time in college, sports have been a constant source of growth, teaching her invaluable lessons in consistency, discipline, perspective, and dedication.
"Sports have been a foundational part of my life, shaping who I am both on and off the mat," said Moore. "From childhood to my college years, sports taught me invaluable lessons in consistency, discipline, perspective, and dedication. It instilled in me the mindset to show up every day, to push through challenges, and to turn passion into purpose."
"Through the years, I've learned that success isn't just about personal achievement—it's about how you impact others by leading with authenticity, giving your best, and making those around you better," added Moore. "Win or lose you never really lose you always gain a lesson! Sports taught me that you only have one name! The legacy you create, sets for those who follow. That's the essence of who I am today—a woman driven by purpose focused on making a difference."
Trinity Carruthers, a senior Volleyball setter from Grande Prairie, Texas, has been deeply shaped by the sport of volleyball, which has been a constant presence in her life from childhood through college.
"Sports, particularly volleyball, have profoundly shaped my life from childhood to college," remarked Carruthers. "Starting at age 10, the sport became a cornerstone of my development, teaching me resilience, leadership, and the importance of teamwork."
"Through the highs of victory and the lows of injury, like my shoulder surgery in 2023, volleyball has pushed me to overcome challenges and grow both physically and mentally," added Carruthers. "It has instilled in me a sense of responsibility, perseverance, and the ability to lead with purpose—qualities that extend far beyond the court. As I close this chapter, I carry with me invaluable lessons that will guide me in all aspects of life."
As we celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day, we honor not only the incredible achievements of female athletes but also the ongoing journey toward equality in sports. At Morgan State, we remain committed to supporting female athletes, fostering an environment where they can thrive and inspire future generations. Let this day serve as a reminder of the strength, determination, and potential that women bring to the world of sports and beyond.
