Friday Night Lights Dim for Hornets Outlast Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 8, 2025) – Morgan State battled the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) leading Delaware State Hornets down to the wire, but a potential game-winning 45-yard field goal by Alex Amaya sailed wide as the Bears' second-half comeback came up just short in a 14-12 loss at Hughes Stadium during a nationally televised contest.

The win lifted Delaware State to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in MEAC play, while Morgan State fell to 3-7 and 0-3 in conference action.

Only two yards separated the teams in total offense. The Bears outgained Delaware State 285-283 and held the Hornets — who entered the game as the FCS rushing leader — to just 114 yards on the ground. Morgan State piled up 173 rushing yards behind a strong night from redshirt freshman Randall Nauden, who led the Bears with seven carries for 104 yards and a 67-yard touchdown run.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Raymond Moore, the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, completed 10 of 24 passes for 112 yards while enduring five sacks. Joseph Kennerly Jr. added a team-high three receptions for 40 yards.

Defensively, Jianni Woodson-Brooks and Erick Hunter anchored the Bears with eight tackles apiece. Woodson-Brooks also tallied 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack, while Hunter added two tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry. Jordan Johnson II and Lance Byndon each recorded interceptions for Morgan State.

Delaware State quarterback Kaiden Bennett led the Hornets' offense, completing 16 of 24 passes for 169 yards, including two picks. James Jones rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, and wideouts Maurice Clark (44 yds), Terrence Rone (40 yds), and NyGhee Lolley (11 yds) finished with three catches apiece.

For Delaware State, quarterback Kaiden Bennett completed 16 of 24 passes for 169 yards, though he was intercepted twice. James Jones rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while wideouts Maurice Clark (44 yds), Terrence Rone (40 yds), and NyGhee Lolley (11 yds) each caught three passes.

The Hornets struck first when Jones broke loose for a 68-yard touchdown on their opening drive. They extended the lead early in the second quarter when Jones fumbled at the goal line, and A. Francis recovered in the end zone for a 14-3 advantage.

Morgan State fought back in the second half. Amaya connected on a 19-yard field goal late in the third quarter, and early in the fourth, Nauden burst through the middle for a 67-yard score to pull the Bears within 14-12. His two-point conversion run was stopped just short of the goal line.

The Bears' defense held the Hornets scoreless in the second half, setting up one final chance to win. After a key third-down sack by Hunter forced a punt, Morgan State took over at its own 13-yard line with 1:55 to play. Moore led a determined drive, picking up first downs with a 13-yard scramble and a 14-yard pass to Malique Leatherbury, advancing to the Delaware State 28. With five seconds remaining, Amaya attempted a 45-yard field goal — his longest try of the season — but it drifted wide, sealing the Hornets' narrow victory and snapping a six-game losing streak to Morgan State.
