Harney Wins 149 lb Bracket at Cornell Big Red Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. (Nov. 24, 2025) – Morgan State wrestling made its presence felt at Cornell's Big Red Invitational on Sunday at the Athletics and Events Center on the campus of Ithaca College. Standout newcomer Eugene Harney captured the 149-pound title after a full day of round-robin action, further solidifying his status as one of the hottest wrestlers in the program.

Harney was dominant throughout the day, piecing together one of the tournament's most impressive runs. He opened with a gritty 3–2 decision over Clarion's Oliver Fairfield, followed by a commanding 12–3 major decision against Bloomsburg's Jay Chase. Harney's momentum continued in his third bout, advancing by medical forfeit against Cornell's Mac Calavita to set up a title showdown with Brown's Eli Carr.

In the championship match, Harney methodically built a lead he would never surrender. After a scoreless first period, he seized control with an early second-period takedown and carried a 3–1 advantage into the final frame. From there, he turned up the pressure and rolled to a 10–2 major decision to secure the 149-pound title at the Big Red Invitational.

"We're very proud and excited about Eugene's performance at the Big Red Invitational that Cornell University hosted!" said Morgan State head coach Kenny Monday.

"His hard work and consistency in the practice room is showing up in his matches. Eugene is competing with confidence right now and building momentum — 10 wins and only one loss so far!"

Next Up: Morgan State wrestling returns to action on Sunday, November 23rd at the Cornell Big Red Invitational, followed by a matchup at N.C. State on Sunday, December 7.
