Lady Bears Drop Third straight; Fall To Rival Coppin State, 61-56

Coppin State wins third straight in “East vs. West” battle.

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 25, 2025)--Angel Jones scored a game-high 20 points and Laila Lawrence added a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to lead visiting Coppin State to a 61-56 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.

Cire Worley added 10 points, as the guests ended a two-game losing skid and handed the Lady Bears their second consecutive home loss. The Eagles (12-9, 3-2 MEAC) have won three straight over Morgan State and now trail the all-time series, 47-46.

Morgan State (9-11, 2-3 MEAC) was led by Naya Ojukwu, who finished with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, both team highs. Ojukwu also had a game-high three steals and added a block. Tamaria Rumph and Gabrielle Johnson each tallied 10 points, while Laila Fair and Nia Green both scored seven points and hauled in seven rebounds.

Ojukwu scored nine of Morgan's first 14 points, as the Lady Bears held an 18-13 advantage after one quarter of play.

Coppin State, which held a 32-27 lead at the half, put together a 12-8 spurt to take a 46-40 lead in the third quarter. Morgan would close out the period scoring the final five points, including a heave from Rumph beyond halfcourt as time expired to bring the Lady Bears within, 46-45 after three quarters.

The Eagles would answer a mini 5-0 run by Morgan State with its own 5-0 spurt to even the score at 52 all. Rumph would end the Eagles' run by hitting a three-pointer to put the hosts ahead 55-52 with 4:09 remaining in the game.

However, that would be the last field goal of the game for Morgan State. Coppin State would close out the game scoring the final seven points in the midst of a 9-1 run for the 61-56 victory.

Coppin State forced 22 Morgan State turnovers, which it converted into 24 points. The Eagles would shoot 39% (22-of-56) for the game, including 33% (7-of-21) from three-point range. Coppin State finished 10-of-16 (63%) from the free throw line.

The Lady Bears finished the contest shooting 22-of-55 from the floor for 40% and connected on 5-of-18 (28%) from beyond the arc. Morgan connected on 7-of-11 (64%) from the charity stripe.

Morgan State will be off until next Saturday, Feb. 1, when it hosts Maryland Eastern Shore for its Coaches vs. Cancer contest. The game will also mark Community and Cheer Day. The Hawks (7-12, 2-2 MEAC) were a 66-46 winner over Delaware State on Saturday.
