Delaware State Defeats Morgan State, 3-0

DOVER, Del. (Sept. 29, 2024)--Gerren Tomlin recorded a double-double with a match-high 16 kills and added 10 digs to help host Delaware State to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-12) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.
 
Morgan State, which is in the midst of a three-match losing skid, fell to 4-12 overall and 0-2 in the MEAC, while Delaware State improved to 5-10, 1-1 MEAC.
 
Naz Tuncay tallied 19 assists and Paige Ahakuelo added 16. Morgan Allen collected a match-high 11 digs in the win for Delaware State.
 
The host Hornets used a mini 4-0 run in the first set to break a 7-7 tie and held an 11-7 lead, that they would not relinquish. Morgan pulled within 13-11 on an attack error on the Hornets, but that would be as close as the Bears would get. Delaware State countered with a 7-2 spurt to take a 20-13 lead. Morgan State got back-to-back kills from Madison Grace and Addison Metts to cap off a 4-0 run and cut the deficit to 21-18, but Delaware State closed out the set scoring the final four points for the win. The Hornets would hit .314 with 14 kills in the set, while Morgan totaled nine kills and hit .214.
 
Morgan State trailed in Set 2, 13-11 after getting back-to-back assisted blocks from Ainara Fernandes and Jada Williams. Delaware State would score the next four points all on kills from Alondra Maldonado to up the lead to 17-11. The Bears scored three consecutive points to get within 17-14, but the Hornets closed the door by scoring eight straight points for the 25-14 win.  
 
Set 3 was all Delaware State, as the Hornets recorded a set-best 16 kills for a set-high .353 attack percentage. Morgan State, which never led in the set, was held to a low three kills and an -0.037 attack percentage. The Hornets jumped out to a 12-3 lead and closed out the set and match scoring seven of the final nine points to earn the 25-12 victory.
 
Williams, Grace and Metts each totaled four kills for Morgan State, which finished with 18 kills for the match. Erin Carpenter led the team with seven assists, while Hannah Chappelle and Metts each had a team-high seven digs.
 
The Bears will be off until Friday, Oct. 4, when they welcome North Carolina Central to Hill Field House for a MEAC match at 4 p.m.
