Morgan State Sweeps Host Penn In Finale Of Penn Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sept. 14, 2024)--Fresh off winning the final three sets to compete a come-from-behind victory in its previous match against Manhattan, the Bears had little time to get ready for host Penn.

Riding the momentum from its win, the Bears jumped on the host Quakers taking the first two sets. They were the first set losses this weekend for Penn, who was looking to go undefeated over the weekend after winning its first two contests of the Sonesta Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square Penn Invitational by 3-0 scores over Manhattan and Le Moyne.

In the end it was just too much Morgan State, as the Bears would sweep the host Quakers, 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-22) live on ESPN+ on Saturday evening at The Palestra. Morgan State improved to 3-8 on the season and Penn fell to 4-3.

It would be the second loss for Penn in a week to one of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's Baltimore schools. On Tuesday the Quakers lost on the road at Coppin State, which needed all five sets to defeat Penn.

Madison Grace led the Bears with a match-high 11 kills, while hitting .429 for the match. Jada Williams and Addison Metts each added seven kills. Trinity Carruthers recorded 15 assists and Mya Karrick added 14. Hannah Chappelle and Metts totaled a match-best 11 digs each.

Penn was paced by Emery Moore, who finished with 18 assists. Adell Murray had a team-high nine kills and Abigail Reid recorded nine digs to lead the Quakers.

The Bears finished the contest holding an 8.0-2.0 advantage in blocks over Penn. Williams led Morgan with a match-high five blocks, including a solo block. and Daniela Ferreira added four.

Morgan State will now prepare for the Patriot Invite (Sept. 19-21) in Fairfax, Va. The Bears will face host George Mason on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. Morgan will then take on Gardner-Webb on Friday at 4 p.m., before closing out the tournament on Saturday against Fairleigh Dickerson at 1 p.m.
