BALTIMORE, Md (April 27, 2024)--There was much anticipation heading into this weekend's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series finale between crosstown rivals Morgan State and Coppin State. The Lady Bears were entering the weekend sitting on top in the league's standings and needed one more win to claim the regular season crown outright, while second place Coppin State was searching for a series sweep to claim the title for itself.
Â
Saturday's doubleheader would be marred by a two hour and 23-minute rain delay, stopping play in the top of the fourth inning. However, the stoppage would not deter the Lady Bears from their goal, as they would defeat Coppin State, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field.
Â
With the win, the Lady Bears claimed their fourth consecutive MEAC regular season title, beginning with the 2021 season when Morgan State claimed the MEAC Northern Division title in what was the conference's final year of division play. Saturday's victory also marked the fifth regular season title in six seasons for the Lady Bears dating back to the 2018 campaign. The 2020 season was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Â
Morgan State's
Victoria Fletcher, the reigning back-to-back MEAC Pitcher of the Week selection, was dominant in the circle. She would go the distance, surrendering just two hits, while striking out six batters to overcome three Morgan State errors.
Â
The Lady Bears broke a scoreless game when
Ellie Bostedt singled to right field to score
Anaya Hunte in the third.
Â
Once play resumed from the rain delay,
Mia Ewell doubled to left field in the fourth inning to score
Chandler Mitchell to put Morgan up 2-0.
Â
Bostedt, who has been named MEAC Rookie of the Week the past two weeks, finished the day going 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Ewell was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hunte finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Â
Fletcher improved to 7-3 on the season with the win, while Coppin State's Vanessa Carrizosa fell to 12-14.                                    Â
As a result of Saturday's weather, the Lady Bears and Coppin State will now play a doubleheader on Sunday, April 28 beginning at 11 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. start in the regular season finale.
Â
Morgan State now needs one more win to extend its MEAC series winning streak to nine straight series, dating back to last season and two more wins to tie the school record for victories in a season (31), which was set by the 2022 team.
Â
Sunday will also be Senior Day for the Lady Bears. Morgan State will honor its seven seniors (
Emily Raubuch,
Maia Wilkins,
Chandler Mitchell,
Anaya Hunte,
Mia Ewell,
Ky'Anah Lake and
Melissa Paz) between Games 1 and 2.
