Morgan Wins Series Against Rival Coppin State; Takes Game 2 In Extra Innings

BALTIMORE, Md (April 27, 2024)--Morgan State wrapped up the 2024 regular season with a doubleheader split against rival Coppin State on Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Lois T. Murray Field. The host Lady Bears won the opener, 5-4 in eight innings, but dropped the nightcap, 3-0.

With the Game 1 win, the Lady Bears extended their MEAC series winning streak to nine straight dating back to last season and earned its second 30-win season. However, the loss prevented Morgan's seniors from winning their final home contest of their career, and delayed Morgan from tying the school record for wins at 31 set by the 2022 team.

Coppin State (20-20, 15-6 MEAC) got on the board first when Seryna Esparza reached on a fielding error, which allowed Celeste Gonzales to cross the plate.

Morgan State (30-17, 18-3 MEAC) evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the opening inning when Ellie Bostedt singled up the middle to score Amber Rivas.

The Lady Bears took their first lead of the day when Alison Keener singled up the middle up the middle in the second inning to score Chandler Mitchell and Anaya Hunte.

The lead would increase to 4-1 in the third when Mia Ewell doubled to left field to score Cassie White.

Playing under the international rules, Nia Lewis was placed on second base to start the bottom half of the eighth inning. Bostedt would ground out to second to score Lewis and give the hosts the 5-4 victory in eight innings.

Bostedt led Morgan, going 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, while Hunte finished 2-for-4 with a run. Alison Keener was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI and Victoria Fletcher went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Emily Raubuch got the win for Morgan State to improve to 7-2 on the season. Raubuch tossed four strikeouts and allowed one hit in 3.2 innings of relief work.

Game 2
Following Senior Day presentations between games for Morgan's seven seniors (Maia Wilkins, Chandler Mitchell, Emily Raubuch, Ky'Anah Lake, Anaya Hunte, Mia Ewell and Melissa Paz), Coppin State would spoil the Lady Bears season finale with a 3-0 victory.

Seryna Esparza led the way for Coppin State going 2-for-3 at the plate, a run scored and a game-high two RBI. Vanessa Carrizosa (13-14) picked up the win for the Eagles. She would go the distance, surrendering three hits and two walks, while striking out two batters.

Coppin got on the board in the first inning when Esparza singled to left field to score Celeste Gonzales for the 1-0 lead.

The Eagles added to their lead in the third inning when Manaia Fonoti singled to right field and Aniyah Haley advanced to third and scored on a throwing error. Coppin then added an insurance run in the fourth inning when Esparza homered to right field to give the visiting Eagles a 3-0 cushion.

Morgan State, which was limited to three hits, got a hit each from Ewell and Hunter Newman, who both were 1-for-3 and Ellie Bostedt, who went 1-for-2 at the plate.
