BALTIMORE, Md. (April 28, 2024) -- Morgan State University student-athletes Ishana Asinor (track & field) and Erick Hunter (football) were recognized as the female and male student-athletes of the year at the 36th Annual Athletics Awards Banquet at the MSU Student Center Theater. Head coach Larry Hineline (softball) was selected as the Coach of the Year.
Ishana Asinor is a one-time MEAC Field Athlete of the Week performer during the indoor season. At the MEAC Indoor Championship, Asinor soared to new heights, setting a school record and personal best with a remarkable vault of 3.50m. She won the jump off to capture the pole vault title at the NYC Gotham Cup and placed first in the pole vault at the HBCU Showcase with a mark of 10-11.75 (3.35m), which was the previous school record which she set a year ago. Rounding out her impressive indoor season, Asinor secured a second-place finish in the pole vault at the Towson Spring Invitational.
Morgan linebacker Erick Hunter was named the BOXTOROW Impact Player of the Year, a well-deserved recognition for his outstanding performance throughout the season. As a key member of the Bears defense, Hunter helped lead the team to some of the top marks in all of college football. Not only was he named an FCS Football Central All-American and an All-MEAC First Team selection, but he was also a finalist for the prestigious Buck Buchanan Award. He played a crucial role in Morgan's impressive defensive stats, ranking as the top defense in the MEAC and the 17th in the FCS. Additionally, Hunter and his teammates boasted the top scoring defense in the conference and the 23rd in the entire FCS. Hunter led the MEAC in tackles per game (7.5), recording 75 tackles (47 solo), 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, and two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown.
Coach Larry Hineline guided the Lady Bears to their fourth consecutive MEAC regular season crown with an 18-3 MEAC record. Morgan State finished 30-17 to close out the regular season, one win shy of tying the school record for wins. Finished with a 21-5 record at home. Hineline has produced three MEAC weekly honors in Anaya Hunte (two-time pitcher), Ellie Bostedt (three-time rookie) and Victoria Fletcher (two-time pitcher). Hineline has Morgan State leading the MEAC in pitching with an ERA of 2.10 and third in fielding 96.0%.
