CARY, N.C. (March 22, 2024) — The Morgan State women's tennis team recorded a 5-2 victory over Norfolk State at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Roundup held at the Cary Tennis Courts in Cary, North Carolina.
Morgan improves to 2-10 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
In doubles, the Bears clinched the doubles point when Lauryn Hall and Hannah Smith topped Gabriela Davidescu and Irina Ioana Lurea, 6-1, on court 1. Morgan's Aleksandra Evdokimova and Stefania Moysiadi were first off the court with a quick 6-0 win against Alessia Stan and Laura Ruiz.
With the doubles point in hand, the tone was set for the rest of the day, as the team went on to win four out of the six singles matches.
Lauryn Hall extended the Bears lead to 2-0 with a hard-fought, 6-5, win over Alessia Stan on court 2. Averiana Mitchell quickly followed suit, dominating her match against Isabella Cottrell with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory.
However, the Spartans were not ready to go down without a fight, and Gabriela Davidescu battled it out on court 1 to give her team their first win of the day. Despite a strong effort from Aleksandra Evdokimova, Davidescu held on for a 6-3, 6-2 win. With the score now at 3-1,Hannah Smith clinched the match for the Lady Bears as she outlasted Irina Ioana Lurea, 6-4, 6-2 on court 3.
Stefania Moysiadi extended the Bears lead by recording a dominant, 6-1, 6-2, decision on court 5 versus Sabina Maria Lurea. However, not all was smooth sailing for the Bears that day. On court 4, Iva Jankovic faced a tough opponent in Laura Ruiz. Despite putting up a strong fight, Jankovic fell to Ruiz in a close match of 6-1, 6-4.
Morgan returns to action at the Cary Tennis Center on Saturday at 9.a.m against South Carolina State, before facing North Carolina Central on Sunday.
