Smith Named MEAC Rookie Of The Week

NORFOLK, Va. (Feb. 7, 2024)--Morgan State freshman guard Amari Smith was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola. It is the first weekly honor this season for Smith.

North Carolina Central junior forward Morgan Callahan was named MEAC Offensive Player of the Week, while Coppin State forward Laila Lawrence earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively.

A native of Newport News, Va., Smith posted back-to-back 15-point games for the Lady Bears, who went 1-1 on the weekend.

Smith, who averaged 15 points, five rebounds and a steal per game, led Morgan State to a 65-59 road win over South Carolina State (2/3) and a heartbreaking one-point 66-65 loss at North Carolina Central (2/5).

In the win over the Lady Bulldogs, Smith totaled 15 points on 4-of-10 shooting from three-point range, while adding four rebounds, two steals and an assist in 34 minutes of action.

She then added another 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and recorded a block in 29 minutes of play against the Eagles.

Smith and the Lady Bears will be off for its second 12-day layoff of the season, before returning home to begin the second half of the MEAC slate, when it welcomes Maryland Eastern Shore to Hill Field House for Community Youth Day/Benny's Birthday on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m.
