Morgan State Sweeps Virginia Union, 8-0 And 11-0

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 11, 2024)—The Morgan State softball team continued its homestand against Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opponents with a non-conference match against Virginia Union on Sunday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field.

The Lady Bears would sweep the doubleheader, outscoring the Panthers, 19-0 on 20 hits, while holding Virginia Union to a total of three hits on the day. Morgan State held the guests without a hit to win the opener, 8-0 in five innings, then claimed an 11-0 victory in Game 2 also in five innings.

Morgan State, which knocked off fellow CIAA member Bowie State in the season opener the day before improved to 4-0, while Virginia Union dropped to 0-6.

Game 1
Morgan State scored eight runs on nine hits in the opener against the Panthers. Alison Keener went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run and RBI, while Mia Ewell and Hunter Newman each had 2 RBI.

Victoria Fletcher (1-0) got the start and pitched three innings, striking out four. Melissa Paz closed out the game striking out three batters to complete the combined no-hitter.

Morgan State got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first to take the 2-0 lead. Fletcher doubled down the left field line to score Ewell. Two batters later, Keener singled to center field to score Fletcher.

The Lady Bears added two more runs in the second, when Ewell tripled down to score Chandler Mitchell and Ky'Anah Lake to give Morgan a 4-0 advantage.

Morgan State increased its advantage to 6-0 with two more runs in the third. Anaya Hunte singled to right field, scoring Hunter Newman. Hunte later scored from third on a strikeout by Lake.

Following a scoreless fourth, Newman ended the game in the fifth when she singled through the left side to score Cassie White and Keener for the 8-0 victory.

Game 2
Morgan State wasted no time trying to put an early end to the second game, as it scored seven runs in the first inning to jump out to an early advantage.

Ellie Bostedt got the Lady Bears going with her two-run single to center field scored Amber Rivas and Fletcher. White singled to center field to score Gianna Ettore and Millie Cousins followed with a two-run double through the right side bringing Bostedt and White home.

Morgan added to its cushion when Ettore hit a two-run homer to left field, giving the hosts a 9-0 lead. Fletcher all but ended the game in the third when she hit a two-run homer to left field for the game's final score.

Ellie Bostedt (1-0) got the win for Morgan. Bostedt pitched four innings and surrendered three hits, while striking out seven batters.
The Lady Bears will be off until Wednesday, Feb. 14 when they host another CIAA member in Lincoln (Pa.). First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Lois T. Murray Field. Game 2 will follow 30 minutes after. It will be the season opener for the Lions.
