Lady Bears Sweep Lincoln-Pa.; Improve To 6-0 On Year

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 14, 2024)--Morgan State closed out its six-game homestand with a doubleheader sweep of Lincoln-Pa. on Wednesday afternoon by the scores of 8-0 in five innings and 6-0 at Lois T. Murray Field.

Morgan State improved to 6-0 with the wins, while the Lions dropped to 0-2.

The Lady Bears completed a three-series sweep of members of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), including wins over Bowie State and Virginia Union over the weekend.

It was Morgan's second consecutive doubleheader without allowing a run, as the Lady Bears have now recorded four shutouts, while outscoring their opposition 48-2 through the first six games.

Game 1
Morgan State scored three runs each in the first two innings, as it jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Mia Ewell's two-run double highlighted the second inning, as the Lady Bears extended their lead to 5-0. Morgan added two more runs in the fourth to seal the deal.

Chandler Mitchell and Ky'Anah Lake both were 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored. Ewell finished 1-for-2 with a run and a game-high three RBI.

Anaya Hunte improved to 2-0 on the season. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Pitcher of the Year surrendered one hit, while striking out four in three innings of work. Ellie Bostedt relieved Hunte and tossed three strikeouts in two innings.

Lincoln's Ashley Stringer recorded the Lions' lone hit of the game. Pitcher Chloe Foster (0-1), who was charged with the loss, surrendered eight runs on eight hits, two walks and had a strikeout in four innings.

Game 2
The Lady Bears looked to have an early ending in the second game too, as they scored four runs in the opening inning. However, they could not build up to an eight-run advantage and had to settle for the 6-0 complete game victory.

Preseason All-MEAC Player of the Year Victoria Fletcher got Morgan going with a single up the middle to score Amber Rivas. Hunter Newman singled to right field to score Fletcher and give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Anaya Hunte flied out to centerfield, scoring Melissa Paz and Millie Cousins drew a bases loaded walk to score Gianna Ettore for the fourth run of the first inning.

Morgan State added a run in the second when Ettore singled to third base to score Maia Wilkins for the 5-0 lead and another run in the fifth on Hunte's single to left field, which brought Chandler Mitchell across the plate for the sixth and final run.

Newman finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Hunte tallied a game-high two RBI. Fletcher, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and RBI, also saw action on the mound, as she pitched the final two innings and struck out four.

Emily Raubuch improved to 2-0 with the win, surrendering a hit and had two strikeouts. Serena Rodriguez pitched three innings of relief and kept the Lions from getting another hit, as she squandered a walk and had a game-high five strikeouts.

Morgan State returns to action this weekend as it takes part in the UMBC Tournament, Saturday, Feb. 17-Sunday, Feb. 18. The Lady Bears will face Holy Cross on Saturday at 10 a.m., before taking on Stony Brook. On Sunday Morgan State opens against Stony Brook at 10 a.m. and will close out with Holy Cross at 3 p.m.
