BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 4, 2024) - In an electrifying season opener on Monday night, senior guard Wynston Tabbs poured in a game-high 24 points, leading the Morgan State men's basketball team to an impressive 89-76 victory over Frostburg State at Hill Field House.
Tabbs led three Bears in double figures as he shot on 8-for-12 from the field and connected on 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Amharie Simpkins scored 19 points with five rebounds and three assists, while Daniel Akitoby came off the bench and added a double-double by recording 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Frostburg State showcased a strong offensive performance, with four players record double-figures during the contest. Leading the charge was Eric Sondberg, who tallied 18 points on 6-for-17 shooting. Supporting him was Manok Lual, who added 15 points (5-10 FG), while Jayshaun Freeman added 11 points and Tony Pope chipped in 10.Â
The game was close heading into the half, as Morgan held a two-point lead, 39-37. Tabbs paced his team in scoring through the first half with 11 points. Morgan exploded for 50 points over the final half, while Tabbs led the way with a team-high 13 second-half points.
The Bears had a strong interior game against the Bobcats, outscoring them in the paint by a commanding 52-32 margin. Morgan also benefited significantly from their bench contribution, which outpaced the Bobcats 29-22. This combination of dominance in the paint and solid bench scoring underlines the Bears' potential as a formidable contender this season.Â

While Morgan picked up their first win of the season, the contest was logged as an exhibition for Frostburg State and won't impact their official win-loss record.
In the aftermath of the victory, Morgan coach Kevin Broadus offered a candid reflection on the team's performance, emphasizing both the triumph and the underlying desire for improvement. "We'll take the win, but are we satisfied? No," he remarked, acknowledging that despite the scoreboard reading in their favor, the journey toward excellence is far from over.Â
"And we know we have room for growth, and that starts tomorrow," he added. As the team shifts its focus to the challenges ahead, Broadus's mindset is, "One down, we're on to the next one."Â
Morgan is set to host an exciting matchup on Wednesday evening as the Bears return to action against Mercyhurst at Hill Field House. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
