Morgan State University, home of the Bears, is where football isn't just a game—it's a way of life. Athletes from all over come to be part of the athletic program, driven by a legacy of determination, dedication, and tradition. Among the university's own is Coach Benton Harold, the current tight ends and special teams coach. Coach Harold has woven his life into the fabric of the university, earning his B.A. in health services and sports management from Morgan State in 1996. He later earned his master's in 1999 before starting his coaching career in 2002, while still in his 20s.

Originally from Augusta, Georgia, Coach Harold—affectionately known as "Sport" since birth—found his way to Baltimore after a conversation with his uncle, George Harold, who played for the Baltimore Colts in 1966-67. His journey began with a drive down Cold Spring Lane, an exploration of collegiate options influenced by his uncle's guidance.
"He just gave me the keys to the car and told me to go down Cold Spring. He was like, pick one," Harold recalls. "And I just ended up riding and ended up coming to Morgan State."
The warmth and spirit of the university captured his heart, marking the beginning of a profound relationship that would shape both his career and the lives of countless young men.
Growing up in Augusta, Coach Harold's early passion for football was sparked by the guys in his neighborhood, who had already been playing the game before him.
"We used to play in the neighborhood, and one day they said, 'Man, you should come out and play, too,'" he recalls.
Though he began playing in middle school as a running back and linebacker, his dreams of continuing to play at the collegiate level were shattered when an injury during his senior year of high school kept him from reaching that goal. Still, the game remained a guiding force in his life, and his journey to Morgan State University ultimately provided a different opportunity to help shape the future of young athletes.
MSU Head Coach Donald Hill-Eley
Coach Harold's coaching career took off when he was given an incredible opportunity by former Head Coach Donald Hill-Eley.
"He saw something in me," Harold reflects. This belief in his potential spurred Harold to bring his best every day, a mindset he instills in his players. He emphasizes transparency and honesty, recognizing that while the NFL is a dream for many, it's crucial to prepare for life beyond football. "I know a lot of people that play football think they're going to the next level," he explains. "But I think as coaches, we need to help those guys find what it is they need to do to set themselves up for greatness."

Harold's role transcends more than coaching; he is a mentor who understands the pressures his players face. In a world where distractions are abundant, he serves as a steadfast presence, leading by example and fostering resilience. The connection he builds with his athletes is beyond the field, often leading to lifelong relationships.
Nothing brings him more joy than witnessing his players graduate, hearing them say, "Thanks, Coach, for everything you've done for me." Such moments, as he puts it, illuminate the journey they've traveled together. "That light doesn't turn on for them until they get that degree in their hand," he reflects, pride swelling in his chest. "They think about all the hard times and ups and downs we went through, and they say, 'Coach, I understand what you were telling me then.'"
The bittersweet nature of these experiences fills Coach Harold with a sense of purpose. Each graduation signifies not just an academic achievement but a testament to the hard work, dedication, and guidance that molded these young men. As they cross the stage, Harold feels a deep sense of fulfillment, knowing he played a role in their success.

Looking toward the future, Coach Harold envisions a Morgan State football program that consistently competes at a high level. He knows what it takes to win; having been part of the 2014 championship team, he understands both the peaks and valleys of the journey. His aspirations are rooted in hard work and a commitment to excellence. "I want to win consistently," he states with determination. "I know we can win here."
For Coach Harold, Morgan State is not just a workplace; it is home. His unwavering dedication to his players and the university creates an environment where young men can thrive, both on the field and in life. Balancing the demands of coaching and personal life, he remains grounded, living by the principles of integrity and hard work. "I try to be even-keeled all the time," he shares, emphasizing his belief in staying true to oneself.
As he continues to guide the next generation of athletes, Coach Harold's legacy is already taking shape. With every player he mentors, every young man he helps prepare for the future, and every graduation ceremony he attends, he builds a foundation of success that will resonate long after he steps off the field. His story is one of passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the young men who follow in his footsteps.
Q&A with Coach Benton Harold
How did your experience as a linebackers coach (6 years starting in 1998) influence your approach to coaching special teams and tight ends?
"I was given an opportunity to become full-time, and I was just so happy they were moving to the offensive side of the ball. I used my experience around the game to help me connect with the guys. I had played on the offensive side of the ball, so transitioning wasn't that difficult. That's basically how it happened. I was given an opportunity. Like I said, Coach Eley told me that when he got the opportunity, he didn't know which side of the ball or what position it would be. But when the opportunity came, he stayed true to his word. It just so happened to be on offense, and I've pretty much been there ever since."

Looking back at your time at Morgan State, what achievement are you most proud of as a coach?
"My proudest achievement is seeing these young men graduate and hearing, 'Thanks, Coach, for everything you have done.' That light doesn't turn on until they hold that degree, reflecting on all we went through. We graduate a lot here, and it's always good to see them receive their papers. If some go on to play at the next level, that's great too."
How do you foster a sense of teamwork and unity among your players, especially in high-pressure situations?
"I think it's how I carry myself every day. I'm always early, I stay late. If there's anything that they want me to do, I'm there for them. So I tell them to do the same thing. I ask them to do the same thing. All I ask for you to do is show up, give 100%, and be on time."
