Lady Bears Get Past UMES In MEAC Opener, 48-45

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Jan. 6, 2024)--Sedayjha Payne scored a team-high 10 points and Laila Fair pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, as Morgan State went into the Hytche Athletic Center and defeated host Maryland Eastern Shore, 48-45 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener for both teams on Saturday.

Morgan State (6-10, 1-0 MEAC), which won despite committing 20 turnovers, ended a two-game losing skid against the Hawks, who last season ended the Lady Bears' season with a three-point victory in the MEAC Quarterfinal round in Norfolk, Va.

Gabrielle Johnson came off the bench and scored eight points, while Anjanae Mueck, who also came off the bench to score six points, recorded a game-high three blocks. Payne tallied a game-high four steals.

The Hawks (7-8, 0-1 MEAC) held a 15-11 advantage after a quarter of play, but the Lady Bears responded, by holding the hosts to six points in the second period, while closing out the first half with a 6-2 run to tie the score at 21 all at the intermission.

Morgan State got a little breathing room when Kaia Ponder hit a jumper with 39 seconds remaining in the game to match its largest lead of the game at 46-41.

Ariana Seawell countered with a jumper and added a free throw with 28 seconds left to cut the Lady Bears' lead to 46-44. Tamaria Rumph and Ponder would each split a pair of free throws for the game's final score.

Seawell came off the bench to lead the Hawks with a game-high 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds and Ashanti Lynch scored 11 points.

Morgan State will return home to put its two-game winning streak on the line when it plays host to Delaware State on Monday, Jan. 8 for its MEAC home opener. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House. The Hornets (4-10, 0-1 MEAC) were dealt a 64-51 loss at home on Saturday to Coppin State.
