BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 4, 2023) – Following its hard fought 17-10 upset victory at No. 18 Richmond, Morgan State has been named the FedEx Ground National Team of the Week, Stats Perform announced Tuesday.
Holy Cross' Jordan Fuller, Eastern Illinois' Elijawah Tolbert, New Hampshire's Dylan Laube and Montana State's Scottre Humphrey were selected Monday as the FedEx Ground FCS National Players of the Week for weeks 0 and 1 college football games through Sunday.
Morgan earned its second all-time victory against a top-20 team, while it was the second in a road game. The Bears defeated No. 4 ranked North Carolina A&T on Sept. 22, 2018 in Greensboro, N.C., and have now defeated No. 18 ranked Richmond at Robins Stadium as Damon Wilson kicked-off his second season at the helm.
Morgan played perennial FCS power Richmond to a 7-7 standoff in the first half Saturday night at Robins Stadium, before upsetting the No. 18 ranked Spiders in a 17-10 win behind their tenacious defense and solid special teams play. The Bears offense totaled a game-high 114 rushing yards and J.J. Davis had a game-high 73 yards (6.1 avg) on 12 carries, while Jabriel Johnson added 9 carries for 44 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown to help upset the Spiders.
Morgan's defense was relentless as they accounted for 7.5 TFL, five sacks, three QB hurries, three fumble recoveries and an interception. The Bears were led by MEAC Defensive Player of the Week Erick Hunter, who totaled 11 tackles and had two QB hurries. The junior LB recorded a huge strip-sack on Spider quarterback Kyle Wickersham to help setup the final score of the night and seal a 17-10 victory. Senior linebacker Lawrence Richardson tallied a game-high 12 tackles and junior defensive end Elijah Williams collected eight tackles, 2 TFLs and a QB hurry versus the Spiders. Morgan limited Richmond to converting just 3-of-12 third-downs.
