Defending Champion Delaware State Holds Off Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 24, 2023)--Alondra Maldonado and Ella Sanders each tallied a match-high 10 kills, while Valeria Otero and Maria Caratini both recorded a match-best 12 digs apiece, to lead visiting Delaware State to a 3-1 (18-25, 25-12, 25-14, 25-12) victory on Sunday afternoon at Hill Field House. The win spoiled the Lady Bears' Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) home opener.
 
Delaware State improved to 8-8, 1-1 in the MEAC, while Morgan State dropped to 5-12, 0-2 MEAC.
 
The Hornets finished the match with 41 kills and hit .233 as a team. Kelsie Dawson, who hit a match-best .750 with six kills on eight attempts, also recorded a match-high eight total blocks to held the Hornets out block Morgan, 10-6. Naz Tuncay had a match-high 21 assists.
 
Morgan State took a 1-0 lead on the defending MEAC champions, by hitting .304 as a team with 13 kills on 23 attempts in the opening set. It was the Bears' best set of the match. The Hornets were held to five kills on 26 attempts and had a team attack percentage of -0.077.
 
The Hornets regrouped and tallied 14 kills each in the Sets 2 and 3, while holding Morgan State to five kills apiece in the two sets. The Bears would hit in the negative in each of the final three sets.
 
Delaware State closed out the match hitting a set-best .462 with eight kills on 13 attempts in Set 4. The Bears had seven kills, but committed 11 attack errors in the final set. As a whole, Morgan would finish the match with 31 attack errors.
 
Morgan State was paced by Makila Billingsley, who finished with eight kills. Gabriela Hiciano totaled 12 digs and Trinity Carruthers had 15 assists and eight digs.
 
The Bears will take to the road for its next MEAC contests. Morgan State will travel to Durham, N.C. to take on the host Eagles on Friday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m., before heading to Orangeburg, S.C. to meet the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.
